The one problem I have with Libertarians is that they don't embrace the idea of positive liberty even when it is categorically proven to be a good thing by the real world, like they have a moral rejection of the government providing things for people even if the outcome is good.

Uh, no, actually you can have the government create a program and pay for it using Treasury bonds. There is only benefit here, and things only go wrong if you spend so much you run out of buyers. Why do you think the US can have such a massive debt? Because people buy up that all debt as bonds.
