Trump will win in the long run. Carson has a rockier past and is a worse speaker, whereas people hate Trump by default and have warmed up to him because his force of personality.
Carson is absorbing the votes from the falling opponents, but note that Trump has had a very consistent base. Assuming they don't suddenly jump ship if he goes second, he'll destroy Carson when it's just them facing off at the end of the campaign.

That seems like questionable logic. "The establishment" has no party allegiance. It plays off of both sides. It would have a greater vested interest in rallying behind an establishment Democrat than an anti-establishment GOP.
