While he is certainly a huge westaboo, I wonder if Metal Gear is really "American"
It certainly deals primarily with American characters, American politics, and is a reimagining of western history; the game is, on a thematic level, Japanese. There are numerous elements and ideas that would be alien to an American audience, a good example of which is how in Peacewalker they talk about the pacifism Japan and Costa Rica as being noble or meaningful when really both fall under the United States' protection and thus they are simply protectorates of somebody else. An American would understand that immediately, but a Jap would not, insisting that their nation's stance on war has significance.
I would compare Metal Gear to the play The Mikado, in which British politics was parodied by hiding them as Japanese. While Kojima certainly has some things to say to western audiences, he has things to say to his own countrymen too and uses American politics to do it.
Just a thought.
