Because he was an amazing communicator and won people over to him like it was nothing. The best speaker in American history. Brilliant wit and charisma. And he was genuinely from very very inconspicuous circumstances like most Americans. People could relate to him. And of course he was more intelligent than them all

Back then it was much, much, less common to serve long terms in the House or Senate. Politicians would serve 1-2 terms then move on to other positions or return to private life. Lincoln was well known and popular in the critical West (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin) as an orator and a moderate abolitionist. Still he was thought of as something of a bumpkin by his eastern colleagues. He was considered a safer less alienating choice than Seward or Chase.
