Haven't you noticed, almost no one cares about the candidates' actual policies. They vote based on whether they think they're cool or not or some meme like Bernie giving them free shit or Obama bringing "hope and change," whatever the fuck that actually means, we'll never know. He's taking the opposite of basically every position he held as far back as say... 3 years ago. He supported "comprehensive immigration reform" (which has always been code for amnesty now, talk about securing border later), was for more restrictions on guns, bragged that he voted for Obama, originally supported Hillary, he is in favor of increasing taxes on carried interest. His tax cuts won't stimulate growth. (Tax cuts on high earners do)
He has no understanding of foreign policy. And he doesn't even care. He treated Hugh Hewitt's question about basic Iran "this is in newspapers" stuff as a some sort of gotcha question.
His instincts are wrong. He's just winging it and actively pandering to the section of conservatives who don't quite get how things work IRL.
