I'm not an expert on economics by any means, but from what I understand, the appeal of gold is that it's A) usable (electronics, dental care, jewelry, etc.), B), durable, and C) finite. There's a limited amount of gold on earth, and as such a limited amount in circulation now (as opposed to fiat currency, which is created at will).
The price of gold can change, which depends on various factors. For example, I wouldn't think the price of gold would be super high during an economic downturn, as people would want to put their money into more essential goods.
