I remember reading a history book on Weimar, that talked breifly about WW1 soldiers returning home to Germany. Some of the stories about how the anti-war crown treated them.
I remember one story of wounded soldier being treated in a hospital recalling how another soldier with one arm came in and collapsed on his bed sobbing, then described how a group of communists confronted him, ripped his medals from his chest, spat on him, and humiliated him.
Another was how a soldier in a crutch after losing his leg was knocked to the ground in a similar confrontation that would have undoubtedly escalated if a policeman hadn't chased them away.

1.the only Russian weapon short enough would be a mosin-nagant carbine.. unlikely. standard issue mosin nagant and tokarev rifles are much longer..unlike the German kar(=karabiner)98
2. I work in one of the biggest photo-archives in Germany..I've gone through thousands of pictures of the second world war..I know a German uniform when I see one
3. I've also come across a lot of forged pictures. It's so fucking easy to change a blurred (and reproduced) black and white picture. You will only know it for sure if you hold the original in your hands and see the amendments.
so in conclusion..I also think that this picture has been manufactured, but of course I can't prove it. Nevertheless, this changes nothing of the fact, that these are German soldiers in the picture.
