The true story of all religions is of individuals who had individual relationships with God.
However, the "religion" aspect is almost always written by those who didn't, trying to interpret those who did.
As a result, they are nearly all subject to slight errors based on their most honest attempt to understand what is going on.
But... the basic message (the individual relationship between man and God) is still within the religious texts, just given slight english.
Where the real trouble comes in is when people take the texts as an absolute, and then use the texts to murder or otherwise destroy people who don't agree with them entirely.
