Thread replies: 321

Mainsail Edition

Site for listening:

http://websdr.ewi.utwente.nl:8901/

Frequencies to monitor:

Russia:

The Buzzer - 4625 usb
The Pip - 3756 usb (night)
The Squeaky Wheel - 3828 usb (night)
The Pip - 5448 usb (day)
The Squeaky Wheel - 5473 usb (day)

Other Russian military frequencies:

Patron-79 - 4790 usb
B Marker S5292 - 5292 usb
Arbat-50 - 5426 usb
Katok-65 - 6930 usb
Plovets-41 - 4325 usb

United States Frequencies:

EAM Frequencies (all in usb): 4724, 6712, 6739, 8992, 11175, 13200, 15016

Also keep an eye on any big shortwave news stations like the Voice of America, BBC World Service, Deutsche Welle or China Radio International. The frequencies fluctuate but if you scan around you'll find them.

Just scan around on the site, you'll find something of interest in no time.

Also, here's an informative article on EAM's:

Right, obviously you guys are new to the site, which is great, loads of new people to listen to extra stations. But there are things you need to know:

Firstly, if you hear something odd, click Max In. This can show all labels of stations (For example the USAF EAMs) Secondly, if there is no label, click the button that says http://qrg DOT globaltuners DOT com. This can tell you what these stations are.

Thirdly, If there is a green bar under the signal shown in the waterfall, these signals are HAMS. meaning its probably some russian in his shed. If the bar is purple, this is public broadcasting such as BBC Radio 1.

Thanks :)

What do the various phrases heard on USAF mean?

Romeo, Victor, November, Alpha, Charlie, etc.?
>>
These EAMs are more than likely tests, not much is actually habbening..
>>
>>42560556

Probably best to just write down the times of the messages.

That way you can compare it to previous days.

Romeo and Victor are meeting in November at Checkpoint Alpha to kill Charlie Sheen. you heard it first here!
>>
>>42560638

The first 5 is usually the recipient

The stuff after "message follows", is the message.

It's a phonetic code. One time key. Impossible to crack.

Monolyth messages description
Russian Central commandment stations are using common message format for scrambled commands. Below is a brief description of this format.
The command message format used by russian central military commandment network is called Monolyth (rus. cигнaл Moнoлит).

The name came from urgency level name. Urgency levels used in russian military radiotelephony are

Monolyth(Moнoлит) - the most urgent message level, interrupts all other possible transmissions
Air (Boздyх) - came after Monolyth and interrupts all other messages except Momolyth level messages
Rocket (Paкeтa) - cames after Monolyth and Air and interrupts all other except those two mentioned
Airplane (caмoлeт) - cames after Monolyth, Air and Rocket, interrupts regular messages
Regular (oбыкнoвeннaя) - cames after all previous categories

There is no description in public about the meaning of each part, but our monitoring give some thoughts about first two digit groups, which seems to be in connection with recipient. It is possible for example that they are coming from: xx - district number, xxx - some numbers from unit number (which is 5-digit number in Russia).

This theory can be seen for example in this PIP message addressed for 4 recipients:

ДЛЯ 5Ф7Щ 49ФГ TУЗP 5Й7Щ 66 431 56 298 43 202 66 185 OTЦEПЩИК 98 69 21 67

As you can see, there are 4 recipient callsigns, followed by 4 2+3 digit groups and then comes the message itself.

The message content has been discussed a bit in russian forums and it is known that message CodeWord usually address some envelope with instructions, where last 4 2-digit groups is the message itself and can be decoded using given envelope.

MДЖБ 34 568 ГAШEHИE 48 95 48 13 ЗИЗИФУC 98 36 19 35

There are also so called Zone Covering messages, their purpose is to fill up the air with some content without any real meaning. Their format follows monolyth format, but the message itself has no real meaning. In russian terminology they are called Зoнaльнo-Macкиpoвoчныe cooбщeния or Зoны (zones).

what about the different servers I connect to? if they are on an opposite side of the planet would I possibly have trouble listening to the same freq's that someone else is if their receiver is located in a different place?

I though only Russians and other sub-humans jammed signals like that. We don't even have such assets in that area.

Its probably just a digital signal used to transmit data. Russians are that technologically backwards anyway.
