Yang is easily the most 'normal' main character. Oberstein is the obvious autist.
Is it just me or does Yang feel like a self insert character? He wanted to study history, going by the authors knowledge of European names, I'm guessing he's gone through or dropped out of a history study.

Honestly, I didn't really like that arc. They've been playing up the whole thing about Ruenthal rebelling since near the beginning of the series, and when it finally happens, it's not because of Ruenthal's ambitions or anything, but basically over a misunderstanding he has with Reinhart. And then the whole thing is over in 3 episodes or so and it doesn't really change anything.

Its not supposed to be a ground breaking plot advancement.
It merely concludes the tragic figure of Reunthal. He was a true Byronic hero fitting in with the romantic themes throughout the series. If we take Schopenhauer's definition of tragedy as 'an unfortunate series of events that occurs through misunderstanding', then this story arc was the wrapping up of Ruenthal's character.
In my opinion the fact that they built up a tragedy for 90~ episodes is quite amazing; I was so enthralled by his character and the genuine friendship with Mittermeyer that it was quite the emotional moment

It's a space opera about politics. It's not particularly action heavy, it's mostly dialogue. I'd say give it 5-10 episodes, and if you're not a fan, move along.
Everyone praises Spice & Wolf, but I thought it shallow trash and had to force myself through the 12(?) episodes. Someone told me I didn't have the patience for it, but I enjoyed all 110 episodes of LoGH.
Point is, you just might not be feeling it, different tastes and all that jazz.

Berserk isn't Lovecraftian. If you read the manga there's a distinct hierarchy of Gods that are actively guiding mortals. They aren't necessarily evil and seem to be more amused than malevolent when mortals decide to trade their souls for power.
If it was Lovecraftian the Gods would be utterly alien and actively trying to devour humanity or at least keep it alive long enough to tentacle rape it into submission.
