Here's how it works.
Gaming used to be very wild west shit. People designed titles in their basements. The best shit got money, picked up by bigger companies, or formed their own companies, and thus the world of gaming flourished.
The biggest companies scooped up smaller companies, and then fired the staff or put them to work on shitty cash-grab titles so they could fire them for not performing up to standard.
Some smaller companies just couldn't shove money at advertisement, so they were ignored and died.
AAA titles are boring safe shit now, brown and bloom, and people are tired of it. Magazines complain about it but never specifically name titles because then they don't get that sweet ad money and 'gifts' anymore.
Indie games started popping up, being colorful because they used more than 5 colors or "retro" because they were too lazy to design something, and people acted like it was hot shit. Money went into these games because people like to pretend they're deep, and magazines jumped on it because they figured if the games made it anywhere, they could get in on it at the bottom. Indie devs would love being interviewed for a magazine or site, while big devs would only do it if you were big enough and their schedule permitted.
Indie gaming sucks, it's full of flaws and faggots, but it gets sucked off because it makes everyone look hardcore, retro, deep or cool.
