worst case scenario is a rift fracture and fissure eruption between dyngjujokull and bardabunga. Which would either melt half the glacier or throw enough ash and sulphides into the atmosphere to freeze and bury europe and make it snow in dallas in july.

Well, there might be worse. With volcanoes a lot of things are realistic. But often overestimated.

We haven't had a major eruption in the modern era so it is hard to say. All I know is that volcanic ash makes soil and water acidic and can spread a long way, and that it collects in waterways which are sometimes used to water crops. So between cooler temperatures, less rainfall, and acidic soil one could expect massive crops failures and possibly famine.

It would be mostly constrained to the northern hemisphere, particularly the arctic, depending on the jetstream. The rate would vary and coverage would be be a long drawn out line with plumes due to varying currents. It probably would take a few days for some of the gas or ash to fully circle the earth.

Believe in what? Revelations, at a 'real world' level is all a metaphor for the fall of civilization (Roman Empire in particular), but as you might have heard, history repeats itself. Revelations goes beyond that, as there are 'echoes' of this in every domain of experience (physical/mental/spiritual/etc), since it's all based on the cosmic vision.

tl;Dr lrn2metaphor, the ’theists' are a lot saner than you think they are

>>
>>34545716
>>34545793

Right now the eruption is sub-glacial and there's a 400 meter solid icecap sitting on top of the volcano. As the lava interacts with this cap, it melts and releases steam; but the pressure remains contained. That being the lava keeps pouring out, heating the steam and ice-cap even further.

Basically, right now, you're having steam explosions underneath that ice-cap that is also aiding in melting faster.

You're okay as long as the volcano doesn't breach the ice-dome. But if it does, most of Europe is fucked. And by fucked, we mean, that all air traffic will ground to a halt for like 2-3 months easily.

The entirety of Europe in the path of the ash-plume, will see several TRILLION EUROS worth of economic loss. In other words, the moment; the MOMENT, on the live-stream, you see the volcanic plume penetrate the ice and go 13 miles straight up. You can snap your fingers. That snapping moment will equal to 2-3 trillion euros vanishing from the market over the course of the next 2-3 months.
>>
>>34549607

The magma will penetrate the cap.

There's also a massive dike of lava building to the west, they claim 200 million cubic meters of lava is pressurizing there.

We could see a double explosive event.
>>
>>34549607
ok. but how will this effect North Eastern United Stated.
>>
>>34549607
Why does this place love exaggeration so much? If anything happens it will instantly be the worse thing ever.
>>
>>34546240

Hapcon-2 is confirmed. Hapcon-1 is only guaranteed if:

1. the volcanic eruption penetrates the ice-cap

and

2. results in a ash plume similar to the 2010 eruption.

It will be Hapcon-0, if it turns out that the eruption trail is say 5x longer than 2010 eruption, because this volcano in particular is basically a sleeping dragon that's rumbling to wake.
>>
>>34549680

>>
>>34549708

Because volcanoes are the most destructive forces in nature. We have no way to predict what they'll do and how much damage their eruptions will lead to on a grand scale.

We have only a small idea of what the 2010 eruption did in Iceland, and the 2010 eruption was really small in comparison. And said small eruption grounded all trans-atlantic flight for a whole month, leading to something like 10-15 billion dollars in economic loss for all commercial air travel, which is an INSANE amount of money.

But the reason why this reactions here are so extreme is because it's not just some regular volcano sitting on some island. It sits directly underneath a MASSIVE glacier. The amount of water in that glacier is absurd, if even half that melts, I'd expect the sea level a few centimeters to few decicentimeters. This rise in sea-level would play hell on global climate.

And for the volcano to breach 400 meters of solid ice, would result in an immensely massive eruption. All that melted water, steam, and pressure has to go somewhere. Ice, even 400 thick, isn't so strong that it can contain that kinda pressure for long.

This is quite a serious event.
>>
>>34549871

Hydrogen fluoride is extremely commonly released from this particular zone, as is sulfur dioxide.

Even a moderate eruption would cause worldwide chaos, if it erupts for a protracted period of time.

Where the flow breaches is concerning. either the top pops at dyngjujokull, or most of the channel goes with it. It thats the case, then we'll have another laki on our hands. Though its more likely the glacier will be breached before that and we'll have a single eruption.

Are you indicating that a large proportion of the worlds' crops aren't in areas marginal to being too cold, wet, dry, etc, to farm?

We're talking worldwide destruction of crops leading to massive shortages and the loss of virtually all trade as nations hoard the goods.

>Still not seeing the true happening even when it's right in front of you

The volcano is being triggered prematurely so that an information blackout will be in effect over most of Africa, and then the western powers can use this as cover to insert operatives and begin a systematic purge of infected areas of Africa.

It's been clear for awhile that a purge was necessary to ensure that Ebola would not spread, but it would be impossible to openly do that without a massive amount of public outcry, regardless of the necessity. If all of these people who were infected with Ebola just happen to disappear during the chaos of an exploding volcano then no one is going to question it too much.

Inevitable. The scale of the eruption is in question, but the ice-cap will breach, because all the super-heated steam has to go somewhere.

Inevitable.

But they have no clue how big an explosive event or eruption will occur, merely that it's erupting- it's below hundreds of feet of ice so they don't know how much magma is surging.

>tfw today is the Vulcanalia

>The festival of Vulcan, the Vulcanalia, was celebrated on August 23rd each year, when the summer heat placed crops and granaries most at risk of burning.[1][16] During the festival bonfires were created in honour of the god, into which live fish or small animals were thrown as a sacrifice, to be consumed in the place of humans.[17]

We know that the ice-cap is melting, but we don't know how fast it's melting. That's why the prediction is basically between now and then next 20-36 hours. Also, since this thread was made, there haven't been any new mag4 earthquakes yet.

IF, hypothetically, we suddenly get a Mag6 or higher quake where the volcano is, I'd expect an explosive breach very soon.

If it is as big a deal as the E15 eruption, which it is unlikely to be, it will inconvenience air travelers for a few weeks and force some Icelanders to move their sheep.

400 meter thick ice-cap anon. Also, horizontally-moving lava.

The chance of the eruption range where from being a whoopee cushion. Where the eruption continues for a while, but is a small steady one. Here, the lava spreads out over a large distance and melts maybe about a 100 meters of ice over say 20-30 square kilometers. Then over the course of the next 6-12 months, cracks in the ice releases the steam.

Or,

It eats its way through all the ice and erupts. This eruption causes a major earthquake, it also releases a massive ash-plume that goes up 20-25km. Finally, this secondary major earthquake causes the 2nd volcanic pocket to erupt as well, pouring out 200 million cubic meters of lava.

The second case is much less likely to happen and is an absolute last case event, cause if it goes; it will probably be similar to Krakatoa.

Finally, if you look at the earthquake map, We've had 3 mag 4-4.5 earthquakes along a line. Along with hundreds of mag 3s in a concentrated pocket.

If you follow the line of high-mag quakes, you can pretty much document where the atlantic plate grinds up against the european plate and subducts. The magnitude of quakes also dictates the rough movements of lava inside the earth's crust, and more importantly, where fissures are happening undereneath the crust.

On a related note, it seems Cam1 is being smothered up by a lot of fog and Cam3 is starting to show fog coming down from the mountains. No idea if this is natural or a result of the eruption and heating of the ice/escaping of some steam in some crack somewhere.

It looks like the volcano is following scenario A: >>34553239

A prolonged slow eruption. However, there's a secondary magma chamber that's of concern as well.

So the advice to you right now is to pack a bag for 3 days of clothes, have your passport out where you can find it very easily, and just make general preps to leave IN THE CASE OF.

But don't actually leave. At best, you'll be ready to go the moment it happens, at the worst, you'll have to only put back shit. If you have any pets, plan accordingly for them as well.

Tl;dr, plan for the worst, hope for the best--but don't act on anything until it happens.
