Well by this logic we should close the border against Americans since there was some crazed religious extremist who went into a church and murdered 60 people because they were black. The fact of the matter is that Muslims (and other minorities) living in France are constantly treated like second class citizens, living in ghettos in a society where even in 2015, white privilege takes you a long way and if you've not got it then you're going to be fighting an uphill battle. There's obviously no justifications for what we saw today but there's still cause and effect: if you treat people like garbage, make them powerless, poor and living in ghetto, you're going to eventually push some already borderline people to retaliate in the only way they know how.
These are complex issues and the knee-jerk right winged response of "HURR DURRRR THE MUSLEMS" is precisely the wrong approach since it just restarts the cycle of racism -> poverty -> anger -> retaliation that's got us into the mess we're into. If we're serious about solving these issues, we've got to get serious about racism, poverty, Islamophobia and the other underlying causes.
This is Canada, there's no doubt in my mind we're better than this. We're a nation of tolerance, multiculturalism and love. That's why we won't give into the politics of fear and with open arms will welcome 25,000 human beings in need, no matter what the colour of their skin, who they love, what gender they identify as or where they pray.
