Alcoholic here, mostly dry for 2,5 years.
Tried AA after my first detox, absolutely not my cup of tea. They are very sect-like, with very rigid structures for their meetings. What I hated the most is that you'll never get any real feedback after sharing, actually people are supposed to NOT give you feedback, just listen to your sob story and clap afterwards. Well of course you _can_ try to have a chat with others after the meeting, but not during it.
I'm aware that their rigid recipe is exactly what many people want and need, and seems to help a certain group of people. But personally I feel way more at home at a local support group who is way more relaxed and flexible.
A good thing, though, is that AA are very active everywhere, everyday. Like, for any day of the week I could find a meeting somewhere in town or at least close if I needed. (I live in a highly populated area though, so there's that)
They are also the only support group, at least in my city, which will take you in if you're not dry - as long as you manage to be sober when you go to the meetings.
