A LOOK AT DENMARK, BERNIE'S WET DREAM
I was born and raised in Denmark and still live here, in the country's 8th biggest municipality of Randers. I took this photo last weekend, a typical quiet sunday here. After exchange programs to the US twice, one in 2014 and one in 2015, I feel informed enough to let you know why bringing more of Denmark to the US might not be in anyone's best interest.
Danish cars are always much smaller and less modern, even compare to cars in Sweden. A car like the one in this photo is typical. We can break down the total cost of buying it like this: The company's sales price + 25% of the sales price in sales tax + 186% of the sales price in registry tax. That's right, a shitty car like this will easily be twice as expensive as it is in Germany, Sweden, or Norway.
Why? "Pollution," except that car sales are constantly on the increase and that we, like other countries, are getting closer to seeing 1 car per person. It's just the state wanting to increase its income. The registry tax will be above 70% for electric cars soon, because pollution is no longer relevant. Tesla got way pissed when it was announced earlier this year.
I've already mentioned the 25% sales tax on all goods and services. No exceptions. This tax has the opposite effect of a progressive tax (it is a degressive tax) because it especially hits the lower classes harder. And this makes up, IIRC, more than 1/3rd or even close to half of the state's income. "Socialist utopia," my ass.
I do not have a photo of a television, but the National Danish Broadcasting Corporation ("Denmark's Radio") forces a fee of $500 per year if you own any device that can watch televion OR even go online. Why online? Because their shows are available online. If you decide to boycott DR, however, you still have to pay. Or if you don't use it. You also get to pay if you own a radio of any kind. If you do not, you'll get letters and risk a visit from persons of authority who will try to coerce you.
Let's talk more taxes. Total income taxes are a result of many different taxes on income being put together. For example, there's the state's base tax on income and the extra tax if you earn above $50,000-ish per year. There's the municipality's tax. There's also a tax on 8% of your income if you have a job. They call that "labor market contribution." And there's a health tax, obviously. Your effective tax rate will be all rates put together except for the "labor market contribution". So, mine is 38% because I don't earn shit and so get taxed the MINIMUM in this country. But since I do have a job, I have to add 8% to that. Thus, a job that earns me maybe $25,000 a year will be taxed by 46%. Now, there's a minimum of $8,000 of the income that will never be taxed, and you'll also be able to skip some more taxes the more you work through "beskæftigelsesfradrag". But that's still a lot since I'll be paying 25% on ALL GOODS AND SERVICES as soon as I go out to spend that money anywhere.
The question is what I get for my money. If I consider my tax money an insurance that yields many different services, etc. in one, then I'll gladly admit that I get a lot. Free education, free visits to the doctor and the hospitals (but not free medicine). I'm married to someone who is not an EU citizen, so while other Danes have a constitutional right to help if you can't nurture yourself, that right was waivered to me and the only way that I can get any job insurance is by first working and then earning the right through a DIFFERENT state owned insurance that I have to pay $60 for every month. But, luckily, I can still get help with high living costs and so I receive $100 per month to help pay the rent. Which is demeaning, I'd rather just have a lower tax rate. But I do get it. I go to the doctor regularly, and that costs like $20 for every visit (as you can see online) but is handled through taxes. The most expensive things I still pay for. DENTIST. TRANSPORTATION. MEDICINE. BOOKS.

If you actually cared about cultural history you would realize that values have changed vastly over time. For what it's worth, I am not a liberal. I acknowledge the fallacy of the gender pay gap; I think that opening the door to thousands of refugees who will never assimilate is a terrible idea. I think white guilt/self-hatred is one of the most depressing things currently happening in our culture; I do think we need to reaffirm a sense of cultural pride in the population to foster a sense of unity.
At the same time I support the rights of LGBT people; acknowledge that minorities are underprivileged and targeted by police and that rape or sexual harassment is a legitimate concern for many women. The point is that these values are consistent with, and build upon our existing values of equal rights in conjunction with fact. Islam however, is at odds with it.
If you truly prioritized fact over emotion, you would hold opinions that were both "left" and "right". You see things too black and white faam.
