China is currently doing CRISPR tests on human embryos. The gene they are adding is a european-origin gene CCR5-Δ32.
200 of these human embryos had the addition of the european gene which protects against HIV and some other problems.
Should the gene edit eventually work, China will be able to give their society HIV immunity along with many other improvements.
The addition of genes not present in the native Chinese population will be important even if embryo selection becomes the most common method.
