Politicians are also doing this, and obviously they wouldn't be if the masses of non-whites and self-hating whites weren't marching along right behind them. This is the status quo.
Yet we don't call Asians yellow people or Arabs brown people, so why do we use shitty abstractions like "black" and "white"? Words like these exist to reduce huge concepts into a single umbrella term, and so not only are they removed from the reality of the individuals they represent, they are then easily manipulated and attacked by their detractors. These words are pinatas to be beaten, and anyone who looks like a pinata will find himself the victim of a politician with a bat.

So liberalism, with its ostensible focus on the common good, is of course right out. And while the selfishness at the core of conservatism makes it more attractive, the expected expressions of compassion—twisted and limited though they are (love the fetus, but the kid's on its own)—still require too much of a communal focus. No, libertarianism of the right-wing American variety is perfect for the nerd because it gives political expression to his (yes, his) childhood isolation; he wants to be left alone, and he's more than willing to return the favor.

The wonder isn't that so many nerds become libertarians, but rather that any of them manage to become anything else.
