Personally I think fully autonomous AI is way too dangerous to develop but it's right around the corner.
True AI is going to remain "just around the corner" for a VERY long time.
What I don't understand is why people believe Artificial Intelligence has to be manifested physically in the form of hardware and software.
AI is very much a form of thinking. A mode that all humans can access with their minds rather than an app that you can download.
