Trying to get into photography recently, idk I seem to enjoy it and sort of want to take it to the next level and invest in a better camera from my old 600d but idk if I should and if its worth it. So please critique away, be as honest as possible, I can take criticism!
(ps yes I know lots of these are with the same people, but as I said, I'm still new)

Your skin tones need work. They're really uneven, and usually far too pink.
You should also work to pick a camera position based on the shape of the face you're shooting.
>>2860534 has a very large jaw, and shooting her from that angle accentuates that fact, making her look quite manly.
>>2860536
Nice moment, but the framing is odd, and you're only using like half of your frame. There's no "environment" so it just feels sloppy.
I haven't looked at your exif, but I'm willing to be $5 USD that you're using a low end Canon on center point AF. In the case that I'm right, remember the second part of "focus and recompose" is the recompose part.

lens flare works out pretty well sometimes, as in this instance.

wud fugg
concentrate on the eyes my friend
also turn their heads (not their gaze) more so their faces don't look as broad. after all, they are women.
your post skills are much better than mine
>>2860541
Ah I see :) thanks for the tip about facial structures, will defs keep that in mind next time!
Don't shoot into the sun. highlights are blown

The shots you mentioned were taken while she was moving so its sort of hard to direct - what do you suggest I do instead with her arms?
& desu they're all just taken for fun, I know the models personally & they wanted some new photos and I wanted to practice photography and get new shots to upload to my instagram! :D

>Tuck chin
Models have a tendency to stick out their chins. This looks unflattering. If you can see your model's nostrils, tell her to tuck her chin. This simple little trick of changing head posture somehow makes the light on the face much more pretty.
>Raise camera
Shoulder height is too low, bring your camera up to your model's eye level. When your lens is below the model's eyes, she has to glance down and that makes ugly little bags under her eyes. It also changes the shape of the eye, shows less of the iris, and makes the eye look squinty.
>>2860538
White balance is too cold, everything is blue. Be careful with awkward wardrobe. Your model is wearing a burlap parka and appears to be missing an arm.
>>2860540
>1600 ISO
White balance too cold. Decrease ISO. Have model put down her hair so she doesn't look so boyish. Wardrobe in this pic is dumpy. Cameras don't like narrow stripes, try to pick solid colors or large patterns. Smiling models look goofy. Save the smiles for your family snapshits.
>>2860542
That parka makes your model look like a linebacker. Don't be afraid to ask her to take it off. ISO too high causing noise. Try to nail the focus on your model's eye, that's what makes or breaks your portraits.

I like these shots a lot, great use of lens flare without it being cheesy.
I took these today to test out my new lens...

Block wall is in focus, the model is not.
Should have removed model's ridiculous hoodie.
Couldn't find a better setting? Putting your model on the ugliest rusty staircase you can find isn't unique or groundbreaking. Take advantage of the fact that you have an attractive model and put her in a stunning location to compliment her beauty.
>>2860821
Careful that you don't go overboard when you photoshop the whites of the eyes, this looks a little too white. I don't like that railing in the foreground, I think it's distracting. Even homeless people know better than to sit on a public bench in the rain.
>>2860819
This is the only one of the three where the shallow DOF feels appropriate. I like it but white balance feels a little too cold and de-saturated, too institutional.
>>2860819
Super cute shot and i love the sense of depth!
>>2860916
Have to disagree with your comments on the photo behind the staircase. Way too nit-picky, I happen to really like the warm earthy tones in the girl's hair, stairs and moss on the wall. Her gaze which is a bit mysterious really compliments the rusted stairs, and had she been smiling, I don't think it would've worked as well as it does.
Great set of photos for a senior session shoot or whatever you were going for.
>>2860538
You have some awesome blue tones in this one, I love the creamy bokeh of the winter (?) sunlight behind the model.
Would watch out for the coat which like someone above me pointed out looks like she's missing an arm, but otherwise its a strong photograph.
>>2860916
I liked the setting of our first location for today, we got rained out after getting a handful of shots, then moved locations twice. We went to a library, then after that, we went to a bridge, where again, we got rained out, that's why she is sitting on a bench in the rain...
I agree with you that the editing of the whites of her eyes is real close to going overboard, but in my opinion, it's just right. Half a stop up from the rest of the image.
How I had to shoot "3.jpg" was impossible to avoid the railing in the foreground.
Check out >>2860863 (in the Recent Photo Thread) for more of the photos I took today.
>>2860923
Thanks! I personally like the serious look when taking portraits, smiling always comes across as cheesy. My friend was helping me practice at getting better taking portraits, most so I can do those lame Senior Photos for money in the future. I've had quite a few photoshoots, but I'm still not ready to ask people for money.
>>2860933
This is your best shot so far, IMHO. But like the stairs photo, focus feels too close and the model seems soft. I had same problem with my portraits being soft, so I changed aperture to increase the DOF until I was consistently nailing the focus on the eyes and giving myself a few inches of flexibility in case model moved forward/backward. Great shot.
>>2860916
I'm just scrolling through this thread and while I agree with some of your comments and I think they're quite useful, I've also noticed a lot of your remarks coming off as a bit mean and back-handed. I'm sure it's all unintentional but was it really necessary to drag homeless people into this and bash wardrobe and models' appearance?
These days, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a strong jaw, a girl in a ponytail, nor a girl with wider shoulders. That's who they are, why should they hide it or change it? It's not a Vogue shoot, these shots seem to be casual portrait sessions, most likely for seniors.
Now of course these are just my observations and I'm sorry if I misinterpreted stuff, I just feel like you're being a tad over critical of really specific aspects - like a girl wearing a jumper - which don't make or break a portrait (at least not for me! I definitely can't do better)
>>2860940
Thank you, I liked the shots we did at the library the most out of all of them.
I typically shoot at f/2.8, but I was trying to push this lens, and see how low I could go while still being sharp. I'm not on my PC, but if I remember correctly these were taken at f/1.8 (maximum f/1.4)
>>2860943
I'm not the only one posting here, anon. I agree that the model is attractive, I said so in my comment. My gripe is with the location. I see too many /p/hotographers shooting urban decay simply for the sole reason that it's rusty and covered in mold and graffiti, and that's supposed to be trendy.
>>2860948
Ok sorry I messed you up with someone who commented earlier on the first set of photos by the OP. But you reallyyy haven't seen grunge/urban decay photography if you consider that photo one! To me, it's just a rustic looking shot, which compliments the model quite nicely because of the yellow which recurs throughout the scene. Not every photo has to be ethereal and traditionally feminine.
Just my opinion but I completely agree with you in that the trend with models against graffiti walls needs to die!! Never has made for nice shots and never will.
>>2860953
People on /p/ are harsh man, the important thing is not to let it get to you and not to take it too seriously. But every once in a while you'll get some good critique disguised as an insult. The library shots were great but you could have found some better locations to shoot outdoors, though obviously I recognise the rain makes that difficult.
>>2861128
I'm the one who took the photos. That wasn't me that wrote that, I know how /p/ is, I've been on here a long time.
>>2860567
You're killing me!
>>2860916
What is your opinion on the model's legs getting cropped out of all these shots - in a recent photo thread of a few weeks ago they were very critical when that happened, but here no one mentions it?
