The colors are so bland. I think some overall extra saturation plus some yellow brushing on the grass in the foreground would have helped to give the eyes a center of drift; as it is, I think the colors detract from the image.

You took this at the wrong time. If you could have waited, you would have gotten a better image. If you had done it sooner, you could have gotten a better image. The hill on the left should have been brighter. As it is, my eyes are repelled by it.

Overall, your images lack post-processing. Set up a default import profile in lightroom that gets the look you want for the images you prefer. Remember to set the default colors away from Adobe colors under camera calibration, otherwise you'll get pretty dull colors, in my opinion.
Your images are pretty well exposed, but you expose too much for the sky in some of these. Remember that you can always bring highlights back unless you blow them, but raising blacks will always look worse. Your images have the tell-tale signs of lack of saturation from underexposure. Only just, though. I can't fault you too much for missing the right times to take images for the light, either.
I can't give you advice on subject and choice of image, especially since you're on a trip that means you have to take what's given to you. The chicago image is my favorite one, and the most technically well-done.
I recommend not looking at your images while on the trip. Simply take them and pack them away for when you get back home. Don't worry about critique and editing. Worry about taking as many good images in the amount of time you have to take them as you can.

i totally hear you on not looking at pictures while on the trip -- normally i've no time, but figured what the hell. there'll be a proper workflow on some keepers when i get the chance. i'll definitely keep an eye out on not underexposing. once bitten, twice shy, and i've blown out so many otherwise good pictures from not paying attention that i probably over compensate now. good to know.

i'm really unimpressed by the 24-105 since i've gotten it. honestly i'm a little bothered by my kit as it is, but the 24-105 is the most aggravating part of it. i might replace it with a 70-200? I'm not sure, since i'm a lazy bum who doesn't want to bring anything larger than an a6000 out, but that's a different story.

I know I'm overanalyzing this simple image, but I think I have a point worth making:
when I looked at it, I really like it at first. Well exposed, with the sky perfectly blue, clouds perfectly white, yet the hills are nice and easy to see, but the more I look at it, the less I care. Obviously, I wasn't there, but it could have used more of a subject, like the steam cloud. What I also notice is that I feel it would have benefited from giving the sky, hills, and water equal amounts of space on the image, for contrasting forground, midground, and background of the primary colors (R, G, B), but that's the pretentious liberal arts major in me, I'm sure.
