PRO TIP: stage a photo session with the band and use proper lighting.
While I can appreciate your dedication to getting pics at the live show, the end result is a grainy, autistic sausage-fest of shitty images.

>the band
Protip: use your eyes and realize its not a single band, but a short local festival/scene gig.

>While I can appreciate your dedication to getting pics at the live show, the end result is a grainy, autistic sausage-fest of shitty images.
You are suggesting I eschew one type of photo for a completely unrelated type of photo. That's ridiculous. Live photos aren't meant to be a replacement for band portraits, and live photos can't all be under good lighting at a reasonable iso.

If you can't see past the grain or noise of these, the problem is you're simply trying to be interested by a type of photo and a series of social dynamics that do not interest you.

I do not require you to be interested. :^)

>this is cool. is that a trailer with a house built around it?
Yeah, that area is prone to floods and has been abandoned/resettled a bunch of times (like, ancient natives in the area tried and failed to settle it, then white people tried and failed in the early 1800s, then freed slaves of said white people tried and failed in the early 1900s, on and on), so you have a lot of "just trying to get by" type of housing out there, mostly abandoned

Liked your photos, tho

if you actually knew how to read exif, you'd know it's not "really" iso 800 in the first place. It's a dynamic range setting/exposure bias.
Luckily for you, though, I also shot it metered for 200, for you imbeciles that have no idea what you're talking about on a level deeper than a tumblr infographic.
Be sure to compare them side by side. :^)

I never said they do, I'm just doing my civic duty to keep non-containment photo threads on the front page.

>there's a concert thread for a reason
containment thread for people like yourself who shoot basically only the one thing, mostly :^)

>also shooting DIY venues without a flash is almost not worth it at all sometimes
I've got instax prints on hand as their sets end as a gimmick, which tends to net hugs. Kinda worth it. Kinda smells awful too.

I mean.... I'm focusing on punk shows because that's what the main focus of this thread seems to be

obviously the production value of a show is more important than the photographer and if the venue is some random shack then the photos aren't going to be as thrilling but that's why I'm mentioning flash. shooting at 12800 isn't going to make that small room look any better

>you also sound like you know nothing concert photography
There's not much to know about it outside of the business side of working with larger acts and venues. Something I have no interest in. It is not a technically involved form of photography, except for some people getting carried away with the gear aspect of it. Only photographers care about noise in music photography, in my experience.

Now now, don't backpedal, you pretty much did try to imply this. You just can't stand by it when it's played back to you.

>I couldn't even tell you were using flash in the first few photos
You didn't notice because you either weren't looking, or can't read light as well as you think you can. It's pretty fucking obvious in several.
I'll assume you weren't looking because you were more worried about telling me nobody cares about music photography than you were about music photography itself. :^)

>you're allowed to think I'm some guy with $20,000 worth of a gear
I don't think that, I'm simply pointing out that the vast majority of mobility in music photography comes from a mixture of gear differential, and social spread. It is not in any way, shape, or form creatively taxing. It's barely even important to have good timing with bursts.

> I don't make much money from this and I've decided to devote a section of my life to it because it's enjoyable
and for that reason you've come to my thread with preloaded suppositions of who has how much experience at what, and a desire to speak down. I've been shooting band shit infrequently (rather than as a focus) since the early 2000s. I know what I'm doing with it. I know you cannot articulate any real difference between the photos you are posting and mine, except for light quality. That's why I'm calling you out, to be honest.

I'll be honest, these are bad, if the atmosphere was a dozen people standing around, listening to a band they don't like whilst bored out of their skulls, you nailed it.

Its just as important to consider what you exclude from your photos, as what you put in, I'm gonna guess you just picked up your first proper camera and expected gritty, grainy exciting photos. You may get there one day, but it takes a lot more practice, reading and learning.

Youre regurgitating a quote you don't even understand. This is about framing the photo, the composition, not about what you display.

"Only show your best work" is dishonest business-school advice. It's good if you're trying to exploit a particular market to make money, or if you're trying to meet a certain standard for a certain client. It's naive, anti-intellectual, anti-art, and anti-documentation as a general train of thought towards taking photos.

People that shoot gigs a lot tend to project their own priorities in place of more clearly vernacular and participatory ones. It's the flipside of the professionalism coin.
You seem to be aware that you have no technical or compositional advice to give me beyond "the light is bad dont shoot in it!", but "don't bother with that shit" has always been a form of critique I have no time for.

>Sure musicians will love any pictures taken of them but they also will parade said pictures around and in a matter of months you'll have moved on and become a better photographer but have to deal with those shit pictures being used as profile pictures or EP covers.
Here you are again, under this silly notion that you're ~experienced~ in a social event where photographers are a dime a dozen. I already 'deal with this' if you consider such a minimal thing stressful. Have some teenage isi work with pic attached.

Photographers have a choice on what they frame and where, the issue here is you chose a shit venue with too small a crowd to create any sort of tangible atmosphere, that falls on you for picking a shit venue. You can polish turds all you want but shooting at such high ISO with no dynamic lighting in that venue works on no level. If you want people to go through each image and give better critique then the set as a whole needs to be more inviting. People post this kind of shit when they get their first DSLR and go to a friends gig, they might get some helpful advice but you should know better. These are crap, they are crap in every conceivable way. You may have tried your best with the framing but there is so much going against you that you might as well have no bothered with it at all. That's why people are saying "why did you fucking bother" because it's the first thought that comes to mind for anyone that has suffered through shooting a gig like that.

What did you honestly expect when you made this thread?
>>

>Photographers have a choice on what they frame and where, the issue here is you chose a shit venue with too small a crowd to create any sort of tangible atmosphere, that falls on you for picking a shit venue.
There's plenty of tangible atmosphere. It's just not the one you want it to be. So stuck trying to make things what you want, and not just taking what things are.

>You can polish turds all you want but shooting at such high ISO with no dynamic lighting in that venue works on no level.
if you keep repeating it, maybe it'll change.
SOOC, btw. Hardly polished.

>If you want people to go through each image and give better critique then the set as a whole needs to be more inviting.
If you don't want to critique, you don't have to. Just don't try to pass off the decision not to critique because you don't care as a meta-critique unto itself.

>People post this kind of shit when they get their first DSLR and go to a friends gig, they might get some helpful advice but you should know better.
You've already admitted to not actually looking through them because they weren't inviting. They're posted chronologically-ish, so can I assume you're actually only addressing the first couple?
That'd explain the lack of response to the odds-and-ends at the end.

>These are crap, they are crap in every conceivable way.
"Kopi Luwak is the world's most expensive coffee. Though for some, it falls under the category of "too good to be true." In the Sumatran village, where the beans are grown, lives a breed of wild tree cat. These cats eat the beans, digest them and then... defecate."

>You may have tried your best with the framing but there is so much going against you that you might as well have no bothered with it at all.
Again, your *own* egocentrism is what is being laid bare here.
"I scoff on this scene, unapproachable by a photographer of my merit"
You clearly only like to work in comfort. Some people like a challenge.

Bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, that question, innit? I shot it because I already said I would shoot it. The same reason "anyone that has suffered through shooting a gig like that" ostensibly did. The only difference is, I don't seem to loathe the experience the same way you do. Can't say I'm sorry for that.

Why didn't they get up ON the stage they're backed up against, and use all the can lights hanging from the ceiling?

Also, is that literally someone's living room lamp from their mom's house?
>>
>>2856942
The image here isn't disappointing because of the camera, it's because of the light in the room. No sensor in the world would take that weird green mush of light and make it good looking. Not trying to insult you at all, merely trying to get you off the gearfag train before you leave the station.
>>
>>2857267
one band did put their drumset up there, but for the most part the stage is off-limits right now I think. I walked up on it a couple of times for photos and the floors pretty soft and spongey, probably rotten, so probably not allowing the jumping around and shit on stage because of insurance.

The venue is 6 or 7 decades old and pretty run down, and I think this gig might have been in part meant to help renovate it or something
>>
>>2857267
>Also, is that literally someone's living room lamp from their mom's house?
Oh and yes, thats exactly what that is, haha.
That band was selling "PORN KILLS LOVE" stickers and shirts. You can probably figure out a lot about them from those two details.
>>
>>2857272
Oh, got it. I was thinking something along the lines of "connecting with all 9 people in the audience" but that's a better reason I guess. Shame though. Those little lights up there make or break the quality of light at shows (duh). I'd have been really frustrated to see them hanging up there doing nothing.
>>
>>2857274
Your reasoning is totally a thing in the hardcore scene too though, so its very likely a mix of both.
I'm sure they let the jazz bands use the stage still, and I'm not sure the hardcore bands would ask to use the stage, as it were

Guest vocals from the audience or other kinds of interaction are so common that if its on a stage, half the audience will be too

this poster hits the nail on the head

everyone is allowed to believe what they want and take pictures the way they want and criticize they want

I'm just wondering. I get that you may like these bands, maybe you're friends with some of them. you're a good photographer, I've seen your work before and I like it. I think you had that one of some dude getting rained on or something?

my question is: is the point of these concert pictures to showcase the fact that you brought your camera to a show and these are the photos you got? in the most organic way possible?

it confuses me

I like taking pictures of punk bands because it's fun. I like the results I get, I like seeing bands, I like seeing bands like the results I get. I'm ignoring all the professional work I've done/do for the point here and my point.

I always see other photographers at shows and sometimes their photos are shit but they're still enjoying it and the bands still enjoy having their photo taken whether they're good or not

actually the last part is a lie, some people hate photographers. in high school I shot taking back sunday and the vocalist smacked the camera I was borrowing and it scarred me a little bit. and I've had some angry punks in the crowd at my flash but fuck em

>my question is: is the point of these concert pictures to showcase the fact that you brought your camera to a show and these are the photos you got? in the most organic way possible?
>it confuses me
I don't know what's so confusing about it, or what you're even asking.

That poster didn't hit the nail on the head at all. He revealed a typical juvenile and self-obsessed mentality that many photographers. More concerned with their self-defined status as a photographer, and their self-assured level as one, and much less so concerned with taking photos in their day to day life than with how ~good they look~ when someone encounters their work for the first time.

It's the same self-aware, image-centric mentality that makes facebook in 2016 such a more 'negatively' polarized space compared to say...Myspace in 2006.
More worry over what the random person that finds you without any context of who you are or where you come from thinks than what those who you're actually involved with think.

It's also a pretty set-in-the-now mindset that has little regard for how we as photographers work over the course of a lifetime, or at least, as prior generations of photographers did, completely eschewing any thought of the long term value of photographs towards documenting a social context in a particular time or place.

There's some inherent cognitive dissonance in a view of photos as so easily disposable when they don't meet your "standards" of how good you think you are, or the definition you try to rope all of your work into as a genre-fied photographer, and simultaneously living in the era of found photography and the domination of the vernacular.

But we're verging on another debate entirely with that. The Polymath vs the Carpenter Ant.

you seem to be mistaking the amount of people and light in your photos for your own ability as a concert photographer. Not a single one of these is even properly exposed.
>>
>>2857809
but that's what I was trying to clarify

my question as simply put is (that you seemed to asnwer): did you take all the photos as a form of documenting what you did for the day?

I'm going to be critical of concert photos because it's what I'm into the most. I'm guilty of my status and mentality because it's something that I care about. I'm shooting a festival I dreamed of shooting this weekend. no matter how far into it I go, it will be a passion for me because I like taking pictures of bands. I want to travel more and document my days but I have two jobs and I'm a full time student, one of those jobs is as a photographer at a VENUE so of course I'm going to focus more on pictures of people in bands

I'm going off on like three tangents at once but my point is I like taking concert photos because I like documenting what happens at a show. I don't think you did a good job doing that with the photos you took. I also understand that there is a doxa of concert photography that everything needs to be perfect and look great and I think that's dumb but whatever
>>2857813
buddy, I can send you the RAWs to tweak if you want

and I'm not even sure what your point is with how many people are in my photos. two of them are shows in living rooms, one is at a skate park, and one doesn't even have a crowd lmao. I can't change how many people show up. do you want a smaller crowd? here's a smaller one for you

>>
>>2859818

DXO doesn't test fujifilm for whatever reason, but it's likely that the Xpro2 uses the A6000's sensor.

Here's an easy comparison.

>>
>>2859821
Weird how all of this ignorant trolling assertive asshole shit shows up right around the same time in most of these threads, and then when it's gone from one thread, it's also gone from the rest of the board...

I've shot shows in poor light with:
5Dc
7D
7Dmk2
D7100
D4
5Dmk3
X-T1
XPro2
a6300

In low light, they all look like shit, because in low light, the scene looks like shit. The lens you have doesn't matter. The size of your sensor doesn't matter, so long as you're more or less in the same generation.

On a great sony sensor, you lose dynamic range and depth DRAMATICALLY until about ISO 1600, when they're neck and neck with canon's "terrible" sensors. Colors look bad because the light source you're dealing with is usually very narrow spectrum. Detail looks bad because there are no shadows to form the shapes, because the light is so uniformly terrible across the whole frame.
>>
>>2859823
>but it's likely that the Xpro2 uses the A6000's sensor.
Um no, it doesn't. It's very different, and the performance blows the a6000 out of the water.

Also, where is the graph showing dynamic range across the ISO range? I only see a standard base ISO rating.
>>
>>2859821
Fuji is based at high ISO, the fact that these photos are bad has nothing to do with the XP2.

>>2859833

>>
>>2859841

>>
>>2859847
Please expand on the differences. I could see AF being an issue, and potentially framing, but since her shots are all in focus, and framed as intended... what else is there?
>>
>>2859849
Quality vs quantity of light
You're visually illiterate if you don't get it
>>
>>2859849
It's in the same.. Low light, high iso.

Low light with high Iso with will show better examples for noise and detail.

High iso, the amount of light isn't relevant, you can have a camera from 2008 do just as good in daylight.

Think about it as a fishing net, in high Iso you're just testing the strength of the net, it doesn't matter how big the fish is. In low light, you're testing the sizes of the fish you can catch, that can depend on how big the net's holes are, if you're only testing big fishes, the size of the jokes don't matter, if you try catch small fishes with large holes, you're gonna have a bad time.

Hope you understood that. Big fish = daylight etc
>>
>>2859861
So then the only way to show you that the camera actually does fine in low light is to carry both an XPro2 and an a7s to a dark room and take photos with each, and show that both look pretty equally terrible when it is in fact the room's shitty light that is bad. Yes?
>>
>>2859865
Fuck you're retarded.

>>
>>2859868

Anyway. Fine. You are retarded because you still don't understand the difference. But I do apologise for calling you a retard and not saying why, where's my manners, I forgot I was on 4chan not reddit.

Yes that's how you would do it, doesn't have to be in a room though, just anywhere with low fucking light. They won't be equally shit unless they have similar performing sensors. That's the measure of low light performance, as opposed to high iso, which DOES NOT show how well your camera will do for, example, astrophotography or a club or where OP was, a dim venue.

I gave the fish analogy because you obviously can't comprehend English too well. But hey I'm a retard too.

Now, if you still don't understand the difference, stay off 4chan, you're just going to be made fun off and make yourself seem like a fucking retard.

Thank you.
>>
>>2859871
So what if I had a dark room, and used a tripod and base ISO to bring the room up to a normal exposure? Would that look bad, since the camera doesn't do well in low light? It would still be low light, right?

No it isn't, there's still a difference is shadows and highlights. You can't underexpose the crap out of an image then try push it 4 stops and expect the same results as you'd get exposing it at 4stops higher. That's just not going happen on any sensor of this day and age.

No no, it is how bad it is in low light. And that's depending on what you're shooting. For agnotologist's thread, his photos were of the night sky, you don't see skin tones or anything in that, but rather the blacks and different colors of stars. In his thread it's mostly shadows, highlights and skin tones. In your photo, it's controlled light, a wall and a bicycle, yes it shows shadows but that's not too relevant as there's enough light to show those finely. If you pixel peep enough, without pp, you will see the difference between ISO 200 and ISO 20000 shadows and blacks and all else.

>If you pixel peep enough, without pp, you will see the difference between ISO 200 and ISO 20000 shadows and blacks and all else.
So it's fine at high ISO, and it's fine at base ISO, and it's fine at low light, and it's fine at high ISO in low light, and to notice an issue, you have to pixel peep, without any post processing...

Is that what you're saying? I'm just trying to get a sentence that is:

"In low light, the XPro2 will do poorly at X even with post processing and without getting in at 200%"
Where X = something specific that I can test to figure out why another camera would be better.

Okay wait good example. Shoot a portrait at native and 6400. You can see the difference yourself with color degradation, grain, noise and whatever else.

Yes it's fine at base ISO, depending on what you shoot, it's fine at high ISO, depending on what do you shoot, it's fine at low light DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU SHOOT. But that's moving away from the topic we started at, as we are now introducing dependencies.

Lastly when I said pixel peep enough, I didn't mean that it's hard to see the difference. You jist won't see a huge difference at first glance.

yep good example, can't be too harsh on the skin because you aren't framed the exact same in both, but this demonstrates what I said about the shadows and all that shit.

parts circled are the obvious differences of noise and color degradation.

This would be a suitable high iso performance test.
