It concentrates all of the original content into one noisy, hard to navigate, yet easy to troll thread that hits the bump limit in three days and sinks like a rock past all of the Sony shitposting, tripfag drama, gear threads, and spam that have fill the other 99% of /p/ (since all of the photos are in a single thread).
They are also not conducive to creating cohesive sets. People post a few random recent snapshots rather than try to develop a theme. It's safer to hide in the RPT where you'll get ignored, rather than strike out on your own and risk getting noticed. No one ever gets decent feedback in these threads (because, hey, who wants to wade through 150 photos from random people?), and as a result no one improves.
In the old days, there were no gear generals and no RPT's. If someone posted their photos, they did it in their own threads. A lot of them died silent deaths with no replies and no feedback, but the good ones rose to the top and led to a lot of discussion.
I'm fairly new to this. I kinda like my shots but I'm not sure if it's just the nice lense and not the frame itself that looks pleasent.

Other than that yeah, the more you shoot the better sense you develop about photography, eventually new tricks get old (shallow dof, hipster color, you name what) and you are left on creating something with substance

Yeah, and it was so bad that the board came together and started using a gear thread, and an RPT.
Before the gear thread, there were so many gear threads that when you started your photo thread, you'd post your three photos, and in five minutes, it would be off the front page, an on its way off the bottom of the board.
If you only had two or three photos to post, you'd get shit on and attacked for it. People who had large amounts of photos to post back then were treated the exact same way they are now. And containing all the talk about gear into one place has had a dramatic improvement, from the standpoint of anyone interested in photos, rather than lots of activity centered around sharpness and weather sealing.
I have been doing lots of homeless portraits lately, really happy with this one. What do you guys think?

Most of the ones I have spoken to have been friendly. I did not bring my camera out for about 35 minutes, we spoke about some stuff I mainly just pander to whatever is they say. I'm a right wing libertarian so I'm heavily in favour of the free market and small government but they spoke about how they should get free housing and how capitalism is evil ect I just nod, smile add a comment here and there. Then once they seem somewhat relaxed around me I tell them I'm trying to bring awareness to these issues using art and then ask to take a photo, normally you will be speaking to a group of them and most will let you take a shot, get it right in the first 1-2 they will start to get a bit aggravated if you keep pointing a camera in their face.

Recently bought a Yashica Electro 35 GTN, it's my first 'proper' film camera outside of using disposables. Here's some images from the first couple of rolls I got developed, all shot on either Fujifilm Superia 200 or 400.

Man, I say it all the time in the gear thread, and I usually get yelled at for trying, but I tell people, the only thing that will be the difference between a good photo and a bad photo is what you point the camera at. good gear won't take a bad photo and make it good.
People always come back with "yeah, but a good photo captured with good gear is better than a good photo captured with bad gear" and I tell them "not really, but okay fine, go focus on getting the good photos before wasting your money" and they get all pissy.

It's the same with PS and LR. Their tools and yea they can help. But they can't save your shit tier photos. At the end of the day you still have to compose your shot, you still have know how to determine the proper settings and Kelvin value to make your photo as good as you can so you hit the ground running in those programs.

I think you could have brought out much more of this pic with a better environment. The model is cool and lit well, the blue cloudy sky works well with the yoga atmosphere, but the lighting of the room is messy: the dark patch in the left side is quite distracting, and so are as the reflections on the window. With the dark corners it seems like she's locked into that room.

The RPT only reinforces that.
The gear general is another form of cancer, but I don't care enough about gear threads to write about them here. All I'm saying, and will continue to say into the foreseeable future, is that RPT's are a bad thing for /p/. y'all niggaz need to self-edit a little more, shoot a little more, collect your photos into a set (could be organized by time, even! GODDAMN!) and post your own damn photo threads.

His white balance looks off to me, and while I don't think it's a terrible subject of exposed right maybe with an interesting sky. It's certainly far from great. It's a fucking horse gate, like come off it.
