Your photo is fine on a technical level, but without those stalks on the right it would have a nice pristeen look to it with the plain colour background, maybe a square crop works better? Subject isn't particularly special, but I like insect shots. Keep shooting!

It depends on the photo. If you want to control the depth of field, you shoot aperture priority. If you want to control motion, you use shutter speed priority. If you want to get the shot quickly, and the moment is more important than either of those things, you use Program mode.
Manual is always harder and more things to think about, because the kit you paid upwards of $1000 for isn't doing any of the work for you. A camera can set an exposure instantly, and you can adjust brightness with the turn of one knob.

Don't know what that guy is saying. If you're still learning with manual, carry on, it's best to fully understand manual before using other modes. Aperture and speed priority can be very useful to get a shot quickly, but it depends on the situation. The light meter doesn't know anything. It just knows how much light is on the scene. Having to take "1 or 2 test shots" is something you don't need to do when you're letting the camera do its job. It's completely predictable, completely reliable, and functionally perfect. That photo of the fly on a plant would have been literally perfect in as much time as it takes the camera to read the scene (like a millisecond) with an EV comp of +1.5 stops In P mode. No thought or testing required.

Yeah no. It's best to isolate single factors and learn those single factors (like the priority modes do!). All beginning photographers do when they shoot in manual is needlematching. They're learning literally nothing but to spin dials until the arrow is in the middle.

Except out of the majorly rare situations where your meter is actually broken, it's never wrong. The settings it reports might not be what you want for the image you want, but by god, they are the proper exposure for that scene per the metering mode. If you don't understand this, then frankly you don't need to be giving people instruction and need to actually go and learn how the meter works in its various modes.

I have to totally disagree here. The exposure meter is always correct for a standard exposure, not for whatever you're trying to achieve artistically. Often a standard exposure is fine but there are also plenty of times when you're trying to do something that a standard exposure wont get.
If you mean playing around with exposure compensation, well I used to do exactly that before realising that I may as well use manual and play around with shutter speed or aperture instead. In this way, manual can sometimes be faster since everything is on tap, if I'm shooting landscapes in aperture priority, but see a fast-moving object that I want to shoot, I can't alter the shutter speed immediately.

A stop of light is a stop of light. It doesn't matter if you're increasing or decreasing your exposure via the shutter speed, the aperture, or the ISO. Adjusting each one individually while holding the others the same does literally nothing educational beyond I guess show you that a stop of light is a stop of light, which is a concept you shouldn't need to iterate through each one of the triangle settings to get.
What people do need to learn about is the secondary effects of each of the triangle settings: shutter speed|motion blur, aperture|depth of field, and ISO|noise, and priority modes are perfect for this because they give you the same exposure allowing you to specifically change what one setting to known values and compare.

What you mean to say is that you didn't completely read what I wrote and still don't actually understand the meter. THE METER IS NEVER WRONG. That one set of inputs and settings will always (again, barring it actually being broken) give you that output. Period.
You then go on to rhapsodize on exactly what I said while getting things wrong in the process. No, I'm not talking about "playing around with exposure compensation", I'm talking about making a decision based off of knowing how the meter works and what kind of image you want to achieve.
I don't have an absolute favorite, so have my current favorite.

Looks like an accurate exposure of an overcast day. Not looking dim because of the exposure, but because of the look of the light.
You can brighten it up with the "whites" slider if you're so inclined, but it might start to look strange.

I find the whole foreground puddle and the building on the right side distracting from the subject graffiti art. You may have gotten a better image by moving to 90 degrees perpendicular to the wall and taking a straight elevation shot, as it also appears that the more interesting part of the graffiti might be the image on the far right edge.
Take a moment to think about composing the image or it will look like you just snapped something that may have been interesting while taking a walk. Maybe you didn't want to get your shoes wet. As this is a favorite photos thread, you are entitled to like it. This is just like, my opinion, man, and you did request opinions.
