Anyone have a recommendation? I would really like a TC-1 but I'm not about to spend $500 on a point & shoot...
I'd really just like an Av mode and decent optics... but beyond that I really don't care.

>they are all wrong, I am right
>>2798571
Most of those thousands of photographers with experience in film will tell you that a film body is just a light tight box to hold your film.
Yeah, you might want to spend a little more to get one that has more controls and I can promise you want glass and not plastic lenses, but really, with film, body doesn't matter all that much at all.
>>2798571
I've probably shot more rolls with every one of those cameras than Ming Thein did for his retarded mewtwo review.
They're all entirely adequate for snapshitting, the lenses are all sharp enough, the exposures are as correct as you need them to be for negative film.
A Better /p/ Review would be:
>The Fuji is objectively best, as it's waterproof and you can actually focus it.
>The Konica is objectively best, as it's the smallest and has the widest lense.
>The Nikon is objectively best, as it has a 5 element lense with dat rendering.
>The Olympus is objectively best, as it can meter long exposure without flash.
>The Pentax is objectively best, as it has the sharpest lense with the best coatings and it costs the least.

If what you said is true, then a Contax T3 should take photos of equal quality to a disposable camera, because, its just a body right?

THIS IS NOW A FILM POINT AND SHOOT THREAD
But regarding op's question
Mju ii:150$ kinda overpriced, great lens, decent body
Olympus XA (shot this photo with it):good price, great lens and body but focusing is hard because rangefinder
Ricoh gr series: expensive, amazing lenses but kinda fragile
Contax:fantastic bodies, reliable as fuck, lens is super overrated (the center is pin sharp but corners are awful) overpriced
Yashica t4: uncle terry, overpriced but cheaper than Minolta
Nikon 35ti: nice lens, idk anything else
Fuji klasse:great lenses, fast aperture but expensive
Honestly just buy a cheap I film p&s, I have a crappy one I got for 15 bucks that has a decent lens, most important thing about film compacts are autofocus accuracy and the ergonomics

Just copped a brand new in box Canon Sureshot 80u for $5 from a thrift shop. Seems pretty basic since it's almost entirely automatic, but it seems to work perfectly. Autofocus, in-built flash, self timer, 38-80mm zoom lens (f4.7 - f9 I think but it was $5 so meh), multiple modes. Loaded my first roll yesterday, interested to see how it comes out. Can't really find any info on this thing. I doubt the lens will be sharp but for $5 you can't really go wrong
>>2799340
true man, zoom film compacts usually have bad lenses but the camera is probably ok, the best thing about film compacts is the size and the wide angle lenses, really helps to get close up on the subjects, first roll is probably gonna be funky though

There are a lot of measure of "image quality" beyond resolution, and some features of the images produced with different styles of camera may be seen as advantages to some and disadvantages to others. For simple on-screen viewing, the relatively low resolution of 35mm film (normally) may be largely irrelevant, and someone may well want to take advantage of the different colour response of film, or its wide exposure latitude. A wide-ish aperture may also allow a 35mm P&S to get a narrower depth of field than a similar angle of view on a phone camera.
One also shoots differently when each frame is an actual physical thing, which helps some people take a more conscious approach to photography. Almost everyone who posts here is an amateur trying to get better, and this sort of constraint can help with that.
But finally, it's up to each person what they like. Grab a 35mm P&S and have a go. Was that fun for you? If not, cool, try something else.
anyone have this camera? thinking of picking it up but not sure if its worth the 350 price tag.

Where did you get that? Or did you get the Zoom version?
OP here. How much is too much for an XA?
Been lurking around ebay for a few days now and I see some going for ~$100, way too much I think. I was trying not to pay any more than $75 (assuming perfect condition) or $45 (if I have to replace the seals). Is this the right price range to be looking in or am I a fag? (I'm probably a fag anyway, but ignore that and focus on the problem at hand.)
>>2801107
win it at an auction. fixed prices are always too much for anything.
>>2801110
That's what I'm trying... I've been bidding in accordance to the guidelines I just explained, but getting outbid every time and watching the item go for more than I was willing to pay. My question is more about whether I have a misconception about how much I should be paying.
>>2801113
its 2016. the boom of compact film cameras being good and cheap was about 10 or 15 years ago. now you have to pay for good functioning stuff. its how it is.
>>2801107
If you have the patience a good way to get one for cheap is to scroll through badly described listings every now and then, preferably on local auction sites (== not ebay).
I got my XA with the A16 flash in impeccable condition ~3 weeks ago for €15. It was listed as "Olympus camera".
They might be getting more valuable again, but since they look a lot like any other cheap compact P&S most people won't know what they're worth.
It's a wonderful camera btw, you won't regret getting one even at the regular ebay auction price.
>>2801107
I think I paid like $35 for mine with the A11 flash. I wouldn't pay more than $50 personally.

fuck paying mju prices when AF-1 or AF-10 can be had for pennies
35MM point and shoots are my camera style of choice it seems.
Stylus Epic - Awesome size and fits pretty well in my slightly large hands. Weather proof is nice, and I tend to use it in the winter time/snowboarding/camping. I find the viewfinder kinda small. Lens is pretty good, but I think people get a little to excited about it. Prices have gone up like crazy for these. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for them.
XA - First compact I got. Didn't like it all that much from what I recall, but was a good introduction into compacts. Found the lens kind of soft, and didn't like the shutter button.
Contax T2 - My favorite compact. Feels sturdy in my hand, seems like it will last awhile. It's nice to have aperture controls and exposure compensation. Viewfinder is pretty good and bright. Lens is quite sharp and the auto focus is fast. Got mine for $250 locally. Usually the champaign one goes for $300-450. Prices are crazy for any of the other colours.
Yashica T4 - I like this one almost as much as the T2. Has a great lens and is quick to focus. I look at it as an upgrade of the Stylus Epic. Feels kind of cheap to the touch, but I've knocked it around a few times and it's still running strong. You can usually find these around $150-200 from what I've seen.
Ricoh GR - Never tried one of these. I like the shape of them and the material. Not really a fan of the 28mm lens though, as I find that to wide for my tastes. And they're notoriously unreliable. Pretty expensive for something like that.
Contax T3 - Doesn't seem worth the extra money compared to all the other options out there.
>>2804413

>autofocus is unreliable, will often ignore small objects and opt for the background instead
>lens performance is average at best due to extreme vignetting at both ends of the scale, actually good at a narrow aperture envelope
>huge brick, not pocketable at all
>expensive, makes you hurt if it gets stolen
>winder is loud, no stealth shots
Don't get me wrong, it's pretty good for a compact, but worth at most $100 for the brickhouse build quality and exposure compensation dial. If you pay any more for a Contax T2, you got ripped off for a rich man's holiday snapshitter. Its massive size is what really kills it for me, if I have to carry a case I might as well take a SLR.
>>2805033
I got a brand new in box Canon SureShot 80u for $5 aud. Just finished my first roll with it. The lens is most likely soft as all fuck, and the aperture range is garbage but for 5 oz bux I can't really complain. Head to a few stores and see what you can find. No one buys them anymore so you can usually find a lot.
>>2805056
Does the viewfinder show what you're focusing on? I recently bought a cheapo P+S and for some ungodly reason it has an uncoupled viewfinder meaning you pretty much have to put the subject in the middle of the frame and pray it focuses on that instead of backfocusing.
>>2805056
>I've lost two of them already.
That's because you're sugar, you fucking moron, not because it's small.

I could maybe agree with the auto focus, but i'd say it's a rare miss, unless you're into shooting from the hip or 'quick street snaps'
Not pocketable unless you've got a jacket for sure.
It's not cheap, and not getting cheaper, but if you're into 35mm P&S, it's probably the best value for what you get.
Definitely worth way more than $100
>>2805585
I completely forgot these even existed.
>>2805765
At around 300-400 dollarydoos I expect my camera to have excellent lens performance. Contax T2 ranks average at best because the corners of the frame are smudgy and awful, easily outperformed by Olympus and Minolta P&S that cost less than half the price. None of its other features warrant the price tag. To say that the T2 is the best value for money in P&S is like recommending an Alfa Romeo for a Sunday driver's commute car.

I always put my heart into the Contax T2, or Contax in general. I know they have a slightly cult following as a p&s but their lenses are incredible.
I've carried one around with me on a belt attachment along side my M6 and when I've had film developed, often forget which roll came from which! They're also aperture priority which allows me that level of control.
They're easy to find and much more reliable than any other p&s I've ever used (I have also used the Contax TVS III and it was a brilliant camera, but felt slow to use).

I happen to disagree, from someone who's sold much more expensive cameras to buy cheaper ones that worked better, the T2 is an all-round fantastic camera and totally worth the money you pay - I've never been tempted to sell it due to the performance it gives.
I'm not the most scientific when it comes to how a lens crops or how sharp its edges are, but in real life situations the T2 has out-performed ant P&S I've ever used. I do not treat or see it as a flashy purchase.

30 seconds was when the action started with all the faggots putting money.
i waited to 5 secs as i always do. ive won lots before, like 95%, but i didnt throw lots of money at it this time because the shipping was too fucking much, i held back.

First: Avoid places where people bring their shit for sale in a dedicated shelf and do the pricing themselves. They almost never contain anything valuable and people tend to overestimate the worth of their junk. You can't haggle either because the clerk is purely a middleman. Go for places that buy the stuff they sell, it also acts as a shit filter because the shop owner usually has some idea what's actually usable and what is just shit.
Most of the stuff these shops have comes from estates. As such, they get a constant flow of items, and therefore it's best to visit them periodically as their selection changes. Especially after large collector's and antique events, because the shops often do deals at those to acquire what they deem worth something, trade stuff between other dealers, and meet with estate owners. Usually it's just junk, but every now and then you get lucky and can find lenses and cameras in surprisingly pristine condition. Their pricing is pretty random, most just want a quick buck and therefore sell for cheap, while others think they can get away with charging 100€ for a camera they don't even know much about. Be social, the old people who typically run these shops love to chat, and can give you valuable hints on who else might have something you're interested in. Also they often have less sorted stuff lying around, if they know you're interested in cameras, they may promise to dig something up for you next time you stop by.
Other important places are local brick and mortar camera shops as they very often have old camera frames and lenses sitting around in glass cabinets as sort of decoration, which they usually are more than willing to sell. They pretty much never ask for a certain price but want you to name yours so it's important to do research and be ready to haggle, otherwise they'll try to rip you off. Going around these shops to see what they have is a great way to pass time.

I have owned the special Natura Black (unlike the others it has exposure compensation and some other features) since practically it came out. It's a great camera and I really enjoy using it. Great lens too.

Got my first roll back with this $5 camera. Pretty decent results surprisingly. Bit of vignetting but the lens is acceptably sharp and it operates perfectly. The viewfinder parallax is pretty shitty though, the viewfinder seems to be stuck in macro framing mode which makes shooting normally quite interesting. Most of my subjects are shifted to the left of where I framed them. Oh well! It's a fun camera to shoot with and I think I'll be keeping for everyday use
Here's an example from the roll. The flash metering seems to be quite good!

anyone have any experience with the leica mini zoom?
I wonder when they shifted towards 28/35mm when the past had many 45s.

I just shot a roll of trix through my L35 AF2 that I got on eBay for $23 and I was really impressed with the results.
Would buying a point and shoot like this for $300+ really be worth it?

I do, feels good in the hand and i really like the focussing box instead of the crosshair that the Mju II has. But i wouldn't pay more than 25$ for one.
also peter gabriel uses olympus xa
