I only post videos. I have found that being able to edit something down to 15 seconds is a great discipline to have.
I am more interested in meaningful friendships with interesting people than how professional your work is, so I always follow back.

to those with 1,000+ followers, how did you get there and how long did it take?
I've been taking photos semi-seriously for 6 months now and can't see to get much higher than 200~ despite liking and following a whole bunch of other peoples work.

Don't spam a million hastags, just narrow it down to the ones that actually have a large fan base (500k-1m minimum)
I gain about 15-30 followers a day just by liking other people's pictures. Search for the tags you're using, like people's pictures, leave comments.
Only takes a couple minutes
I made account for my film snapshits (maybe some phone ones aswell). Some may know me from robuss.tumblr.com

That's funny, south Australia looks incredible. Midwest USA can either be amazing or very bland. Most of it is just farm plains. The best parts are Western Wisconsin, northern Wisconsin, and northern peninsula Michigan. Wisconsin has some kinda diverse areas though, so it's cool.
If you're making the trip to the USA, probably start with the western side. Colorado/Wyoming/Utah/New Mexico.

I've gained 1000+ followers in the past 6 months on Instagram. My account has only existed for 8 months. I only have 28 posts - a lot of them have around 600 likes - some have 800+.
Here's some tips that I'd give to anyone getting started. All are my opinion, obviously.
>Space out your posts
From what I've seen, posting many photos straight after each other adversely affects the amount of likes/exposure your photos will get - which has a direct affect on the number of followers they will gain you. I post once a week. The fastest I'd ever post would be once every 2 days. My posts sit at the top of my feed for 1 week, which is why they get a large number of likes. By setting this standard you're not forced to post shit content when you have nothing good left to post - just so you can keep up with your schedule.
>Spamming likes will slowly gain you (mostly inactive) followers, but will also lose you genuine followers
Pick your poison. I've seen accounts with 100 followers and more genuine interactions than accounts with 5k followers that have almost none (because they use likebots and their comments are full of spammy shit and most of their followers' ID's look like this: @gain10000followers59102). When your genuine followers see all of the spammy comments on your account, they'll be inclined to leave. I've seen this happen fairly rapidly on a friends feed.

I try to interact fairly regularly with these accounts - sometimes tagging them in my posts. I've been reposted (with credit) by 2 separate large accounts (both with around 45k followers). On both occasions I gained about 250 followers in 6 hours.

I'm really bad at this. I've responded to about 5 of the 100 or so comments on my past 28 posts. But I have noticed very clearly that accounts that interact with almost every commenter have great "follower loyalty". Loyal followers being the ones that go out of their way to check your feed regularly and like/comment on every post.

Most are likely to become inactive over time, anyway. You're better off continually trying to drive new traffic to your feed.

To a certain extent, yes. Almost everything on my feed was shot with a Hasselblad and Portra 400. People notice this and I often get comments about how "clean" ALL of my shots are. Don't let this be an absolute rule for you, though. Posting landscapes and portraits side by side, for example, won't be a big deal. I think the worst thing you could do is continually switch back and forth from B&W to colour. Also remember that the sooner you try something new, the less you'll have to lose.
>Regarding tags
I use the same 30 hashtags (max) for each post. Most of mine are related to film photography (there's a fairly large film community on Insta). Keep them relevant, not too popular and not too obscure. Using tags like #loveit or #sunset is pretty silly - and so is using tags that have less than 50k posts. Roughly 6hours after I've posted something I will edit the post and remove the tags. At this point they are nearly useless to you, anyway. Removing them helps keep your feed clean. This is especially important if minimalism is one of the aesthetics you utilise in your photos.
Will post more tips as I think of them. Remember that YMMV.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Having cohesive images in terms of toning / processing / stylazation, seems far more important than the actual subject matter. As long as they all have the same "look" I'll probably be fine.

You might regret this someday if ig introduces multiple tag searches. A you say, right now tags are pretty much useless after a few hours, but if people can narrow down their searches with multiple tags, you might end up missing out on potential traffic. A combination of several obscure tags along with more generic popular tags could be really effective at that point.
