I had just a cheap entry level tele zoom and body and I found that the IQ really sucks at the upper range of the zoom.
Probably going to pull the trigger on a much nicer zoom telephoto in the next 2 weeks which I imagine will help a ton

I have a K-3 with pentax's HD 55-300mm. Was worried about IQ loss putting a teleconverter on a consumer tele but from the tests i've done just in my apt the IQ is pretty good, based on shots of text on paper and texture on a football.

set focusing to use the AF button or at least some other button besides the shutter release. then switch to continuous AF and you can just take your finger off the AF button when u find focus for still subjects, or hold the button down for continuous AF for moving subjects
and prefocus to infinity so your AF system only has to cycle in one direction. if your subject is farther than your focus is set it might hunt to find focus closer before moving farther out

Switch to continuous and selected/weighted AF point for moving birds, especially tricky with small birds.
Single focus for perching/swimming but you have to manually override if the bird is in the bushes or if the AF focuses on a twig. You will need back button AF set for this.

yep. the most recent APO one is pretty good for the $300-400 you can get them for. Screw drive AF even allowed me to get (some) in-focus shots of eagles flying directly at me at ~30mph. And a LOT of sharp shots when they were flying off-axis. Used center-point only AF-C.

I beg to differ. I shot >>2779216 with a Sigma 400/5.6. It is prone to have immense dust layer in the focusing group and without special tools (only for this lens!) it is impossible to take it apart and clean it. The retaining rings are conical, no notch or dot to have the normal lens tool to grip on.
Other than that it is manual focus and there is only a few with AF priced as high as much better lenses.
Tokina has the same lens and is built more rugged. Has the normal retaining rings for the elements and is less prone for accumulating a dust layer in the focusing group. I'd much recommend that one if you can find one.

Ok so I just got back from trying the tamron 1.4 AF teleconver and results were mixed. Was pretty quick to catch focus, but it definitely didnt track subjects as quickly as without it.

Good, it shows you are improving.
The fact about TCs is they always degrade IQ, with some lenses less than with others.
Extenders take the lens further away from the sensor making subject distance closer than normal minimum focus distance, but IQ will suffer because
a.) you will get much less light on the sensor the further you put the lens from it and
b.) normal lens are corrected to medium range and infinity, with macro configuration you get more aberrations and distortions. The reason macro lens exist is because they are corrected for close range rather than medium and infinity.

Actually went back and looked at some of my older shots and even cropping to almost 100% to get the right final image, the shots were sharper than using the 1.4x tc and either minimally cropping or not cropping at all. Plus the AF speed and tracking ability is lowered quite a bit. It's a pretty fantastic lens for the price. Wish pentax would make a similarly budget telephoto like a 200-500 or something. Can't afford the 150-450 as it stands now.

I hate to break it to you, but the D-FA 150-450 is the budget super telezoom lens. Gotta go with Sigma if you want it to be more budget, and last I checked ebay and amazon there is not much used for sale and the new ones are not exactly budget friendly either.
The K-1 made the used lens market explode, everyone is buying the cool lenses. Last year nobody bothered with them, now it looks like everyone and their grandma is buying Pentax.

The Sigma 50-500 and 150-500 are excellent when you can fill the frame. Not exactly the lens for pixel peepers.

First you have to learn to use your camera and you have to learn exposure triangle. Look for Understanding Exposure from Bryan Peterson.
Second, you have to decide what shutterspeed to use. In flight or erratic movements, fights etc... you need over 1/1000s. If the subject is chill, you can go lower to 1/400s, 1/200s or even in some cases down to 1/60s.
Watch videos on YT, look for photos on Flickr and study the EXIF data for settings, experiment.
Also don't stop with bird photos, taste some other aspects of photography, landscape, cityscape, architecture, street, portraits etc...

Why do you like using S mode? Genuine question. A mode seems much better in my opinion.
It gives me the highest shutter speed, at the aperture I need for the scene, and I then adjust the ISO if the shutter is too slow.

For anything that moves around, S mode is better. If you're in A mode, and your subject is in less than perfect light, and starts moving around, your camera may drop shutter speed down below where you need to be to freeze that motion, and you end up with a blurry photo.

With the modes you control different things. A or Av mode controls depth of field, Tv or S mode controls motion. You use different modes for different situations and different subject.
For a moving subject you always use shutter priority and set the shutter speed to control motion in your image or completely stop motion and freeze the subject.
With aperture priority you control how much the out of focus areas get out of focus or spread the in-focus are as wide as you can.
You can control how much you separate your subject from the surrounding area.

That was exactly my point. I rather control the aperture, so I know it get the whole bird. It is extremely annoying to get a good shot ruined by getting the tail or head out of the dof.
A mode always give you fasted possible shutter speed for a 'correct' exposure (by the meter's standard), and that can be ensured to be high enough with manual iso adjustment or auto iso with a set with a minimum shutter speed.
I feel I have more control in capturing a scene as I want it with A mode.

No matter your aperture setting, the in focus plane is always very-very thin. The DoF control is about controlling the focus falloff.
When the subject is moving, it is better to control shutter speed so with a panning motion you can freeze the subject and blur everything else. This way you can control the amount of motion blur you add in the background.
Also there are situations where a static shot showing a subject in motion with a bit of motion blur adds dynamic feel to the photo. Again here you control the amount of motion blur by the shutter speed.

set up your camera for back button focusing. that way you can hold that button and get focus, and can either take it off when you've got focus correct, or hold it down to track and focus on moving subjects. as for metering, I set it to spot metering, locked to the AF point, with +.3 exposure compensation because my camera tends to underexpose (this way i can expose for the subject and not for the sky if it's too bright)
as for AF, i use AF.C witch i think is the same as AI-Servo, for tracking moving subjects. but i use center point with 25 points around the center that track movement because it's tough to always keep it locked on perfectly.
and if your settings allow, set your camera burst rate to focus priority instead of fps priority. it will make sure your shots are in focus when the shutter fires. you wont be able to shoot as fast when holding the AF button (you can release it to shoot again at max fps) but more of your shots will be in focus.
