Here are 4 photos from a bi-weekly activity, that I have been doing for the last month, with 4 to 6 year olds.
This activity involves the children bringing in objects that the wish to see enlarged in a macro photograph.
Every two weeks I also use a set of photos I take with them, surrounding a common theme (e.g.: different types of paper, fabric etc.); this set is incorporated into a 'Guess what?' game that I have set up at the entrance of the school where I work.

The whole point of the activity is to show the children that their environment beholds more detail than that seen by the naked eye.

I have also started trying out a few homemade 'camera obscura's to see if it's something I could do as an activity with the children.
Unfortunately, insofar I haven't found an opaque paper translucent enough to act as a good screen, nor the proper distance the screen should be from the pinhole.

Another Idea was to lightseal a room with only a small hole cut into a cardboard covering a window. The resulting porjected image could be fun for them.

No can do with a 30min time limit on the activity.
5 year olds have nigh on non-existant attention spans (30secs is the norm).
This is really just a speedy activity that takes more time to set up (homemade lightbox, flashes etc) than it does to take the photos; considering the fact that I have to keep an eye on 10 or so children in the backround, focus stacking is a no-no unfortunately.

I would love to buy a dedicated lens, but I'm payed peanuts for the job I do right now.
I'm what's called an 'Animateur claé' in France, having finished a degree in English studies last year I'm biding my time before passing a TEFL.
My job basically consists of proposing activities for, and generally looking after, 3-6 year olds between and after school hours before their parents pick them up.
It is immensely gratifying to see some of the children taking part enthusiastically in the activity, whilst their parents have also shown interest.
It is only a shame that I am doing right now can't really evolve into a proper job...
