So the main tip seems to be
1. Underexpose the ambient light 2 stops
2. Increase flash by 2 stops
You're asking how to use a flash on /p/. You've already lost the game.
Sell your gear and give up. You couldn't even read the manual to figure out what your sync speed was. Lost cause.

Practice is all there is to it really.
I recommend picking a still object and just taking tons of pictures of it using different settings.
