Looks better than 6D, that's for sure.
I hope Pentax releases some modern lenses to go with it, that 20-year-old screw-driven 28-105 isn't going to cut it.
>>2767806
>Pentax-D FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR
>HD Pentax-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR
these two are in rumours but they might be just relabeled Tamrons.
and there are the 24-70, 70-200 and 150-450
another angle
>>2767814
How does that dial next to the viewfinder work?
>might be just relabeled Tamrons.
Not necessarily a bad thing.
I have the 15-30 and it's awesome.
>>2767814
>28-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR
I doubt people would really want that on their $2.5k FF camera. Come on Pentax, if you're making a slow zoom, it should be a 24-120 at least, you ain't gonna make it on this crowded market with boring-ass lenses.
(I've never understood why Pentax loves cheap weathersealed zooms so much.
I mean, they made like four of them for their crop system, all while neglecting to fix the f/2.8 one)
>>2767836
>How does that dial next to the viewfinder work?
It's a diopter adjustment dial, you set it once and never touch it again.
>>2767801
>AUTO
>>2767897
I think he meant the exp.comp/ISO/HDR/Wi-fi, etc...
IMO this is just a "knob" menu, you set to which one you want to control and then use the top dial. since you already have two dials for speed and aperture.
I like the articulating display on it, it doesn't just tilt, it can rotate vertically. Not sure why you would want that, but
>>2767896
it's a kit-lens
if a kit-lens was perfect, nobody would buy other lenses
and if it was faster, it'd be super heavy and expensive af
and there are 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8
>>2767925
Maybe the IS system can rotate the sensor
>>2767939
I dunno, typically people buy kits so they can shoot with the lens they got, not use it as a paperweight, so you don't bundle a rabal tier lens with a high-end camera. Look at Canon and Nikon's kit lenses for 5D/6D and D610.
I think the only FF camera that's bundled with a lens this slow is A7, but Pentax taking after Sony in the lens department is the last thing we need.
>>2767944
yeah, i see. Maybe the kit is quite decent though.
It would be cool if they sold primes as kits again.
I really liked the mz-3 with the limited 43mm 1.9
>>2767953
I don't think they have a suitable prime currently. The 43mm is sexy, but not sharp enough for 36 MP and doesn't match the body styling, the 50mm is dinosaur tier, and the 55mm is crop only.
>>2767969
wrong, the 55mm covers FF completely without any faults despite being labeled as da

>>2768490
in 2016 a DSLR should have so many knobs and dials that you never have to leave the OVF while changing settings
Pentax started this feature with the pz-1's hyperprogram-automatic-mode
>>2768492
Maybe they're going for a higher pixel density, it's smaller in comparison to their crop bodies, but that could be because they want to have a sharper display on the top where things don't look like the're on a watch or calculator

I really, really dislike the fact that they doubled up functions on the D-pad. That's like shit you get on a compact or entry level APS-C camera, not a FF body. The lack of a top LCD is also pretty bad.

Here's a more solid comparison, K1 vs K7 to scale, based on the mounts.

And for the hell of it, a K7 vs a D700 to scale. The D800 is bigger than the D700.

Wide angle lenses should be able to focus on things that are almost touching the front element. One of the main uses for a wide angle lens is close up photography. Most of Pentax's other wide angle lenses can do this.
>>2771040
It says in the specs that the lens is 14 cm long and the minimum focusing distance is 28 cm. Are you blind?

I would love to see the other country's or countries' statistics. Denmark being a rather small country does not say all-too-much I think.
>>2771191
Not to mention, Denmark isn't a huge cultural center for the types of things that require amazing full frame cameras (Sports, Fashion, etc)
Let's see USA, Japan, Italy, France, Germany, etc.
Not that that any of that negates the win in Denmark. Good on Sony for exploiting a market that is well suited to their product.
>>2771051
Wait, is this chart suggesting that in four months (June to October 2015) Sony went from 13% of the market to 41% of the market? That seems really really improbable that 28% of photographers using full frame cameras in Denmark even bought new cameras at all, let alone switched to Sony...

>It's actually the Nikonfags. Well, now they're Sonyfags, but they used to be Nikonfags
I seriously doubt it. Nikon users have no reason to jump ship right now, since they already get Sony sensors AND better performance and image quality out of the same tech than the equivalent Sony body.
I'm pretty sure the current A7 userbase is made up of butthurt Canon users upset that they no longer made the smug right choice. I mean, it might be different in Denmark, sure, but I don't know a single Nikon user who has wanted to switch. Every A7 user I've met had Canon at some point, though.

I just expect a camera that is up to date and can compete with the current batch of full-frame DSLR. I don't view pentax as a revolutionary brand in the digital age. They are better known for good ergonomics and nice view finders.
For me the greatest achievement would be an up to date camera with a good price point like pentax is known for.

It's the chart to the left of it. It's the same pattern, Nikon users buying Sony.
The point is new Sony users don't pop up out of thin air, they're not a boogeyman from /v/ coming to haunt you, they actually come from somewhere else, in this case Nikonfags.
The Nikonfags stay the same, it's just their camera that's changed.

Pentax in the digital era is the most conservative camera maker, they will mostly concentrate on giving the fullest still photography experience. Their only innovation is the Astrotracer and not crippling their mount to such degree that the older lenses become unusable. I'm looking at you, Canon. Nor they don't make it so cumbersome to use said old lenses with the built-in metering. Maybe using the AF sensor to check focus or even trigger the shutter.
I don't care about 4K video as long as I can use it as a camera with the old A, F and FA lenses as they were meant to be used.

I'm not sure it's more robust. So many moving parts and places for dirt to get into.

>>2771576
definitely more robust. you could hold your camera by the screen and not have any problems judging by the photos, which couldnt be said about a camera with an articulating screen. i thought about dust/water when i originally saw the mockups but figured pentax has such a history of wr gear that they have everything hamered out

Uh, no. I can't think of any 100% FF OVFs in that price range.

Seems about par for the course to me, a quick google says that it's the same as the D600 and D800.
I find my D610's VF to be quite nice, even with glasses, and it's easy to focus fast MF lenses though, so the Pentax should be fine. (And I know what a good VF is like, as I've owned a D3S and currently have a Hasselblad with a prism finder.)
What do these two controls do?

The D610 has exactly the same VF specs (100% @ .7x) and cost about the same at launch.
I wonder what the K1's eyepoint is. The D610 is actually noticeably nicer to shoot with than the D800 because it has a longer eyepoint distance, especially for glasses wearers.
>>2771698
I remember speculation towards a similar OVF to the Sony A900 with how big of a hump the K-1 has. But .7x effective is pretty much the lowest for a FF DSLR
>>2771703
You can just barely see that there's a second dial under the BKT/HDR/etc dial, looks like that sticky out thing is how you manipulate it. My guess is that it'd be the advance mode dial, Nikon does it a similar way but puts it under the far left dial, as seen here. (Mode dial on consumer bodies, BKT/metering/flash buttons on pro bodies.)
The dial on the right is a good question. I'd think it was just a normal control wheel, but it's already got two in the normal places. Maybe it's just a third wheel that you can program to be whatever you want, like EV, ISO, etc. Pretty cool idea if so, actually.
>>2771716
Good catch.
>>2771716
live view button is next to the metering/delete photo button, where the button for viewing your photos was on the k-3
>>2771722
I don't see it. Circle it in the image you are referring to.
The so-i-can-see-what-im-doing-in-the-dark lights are a great idea... but lighting every button cluster would be so much better.
I'd have been seriously tempted to make the red dot on the body mount a light shining out instead of having it overhead shining down.
>>2771722
Oh yeah, I didn't notice it there at first.
Speaking of "what is this thing," I see two little red "windows," one at the bottom of the front of the grip, and one about where your thumb would be when shooting. Looks like the K7 had the front one as well. What are they for?
>>2771733
for IR remote
>>2771703
>>2771714
Just noticed that DPR put up their preview, and it answers the question about the dial on the right:
>Still shooters are likely to appreciate the camera's Smart Function system, which adds a third command dial to the top right corner of the camera and a further control to define its function. The three dials give direct control over three of the camera's parameters with the ability to customize one of them without going anywhere near a menu.
So basically, the middle dial (HDR/BKT/ISO/etc) selects which parameter the right dial controls. Pretty cool idea, actually.
The article also has the best all-around pics I've seen so far, and with dimensions. I think I can make out a "movie camera" icon on that ring we were talking about, so it looks like the still/video mode selector theory was right.
>>2771735
Oh, that makes sense. They're much smaller and are tinted/textured to blend in better on my Nikons, so I wasn't recognizing them as the same thing.

Why is it that we have to go to a third party website for photos of this product that actually show it in any detail? Isn't Pentax a photography company? Why isn't that website covered in 7000px macro photos of this camera?
>>2771745
Probably a new product release. That's my theory about those numbers in general, Sony came out with new cameras around that time and so people were going out and buying them, while Nikon and Canon didn't have anything new to drive sales at the time.
>>2771745
3% isn't abnormal at all. Sony's percentages are far more drastic.
I'm guessing the Leica jump is the SL, and the Sony jump is the A7Rii.
If I sold my K-3 and all my crop lenses, I could afford the K-1 body easily. Of course, then the only lens I'd have would be the 100/2.8 D FA macro, since I already have that.
Should I do it?
>>2771773
If you've got room in the budget to pick up at least one more lens, then sure, why not? Pentax will probably follow the other manufacturers' lead in pushing FF and neglecting their crop lines, so you'll basically be forced to go FF if you want to upgrade bodies down the line anyway.
>>2770470
I can watch a TV from thirty feet away, it doesn't mean I want to do it unless the screen is 20 feet wide.
The point of such an LCD is to provide you with the information you need quickly and accurately.
If I have to spend more than a fraction of a second of a second looking at the screen, then I might as well just use the back panel.
>>2769392
Pentax shooter here.
they made an affordable ff DSLR with good modern specs, a Sony sensor, and no bullshit. that's exactly what we wanted and they delivered. no one cares if this camera "converts" you or not, most of us have a closet full of AF ff Pentax glass that we can finally use natively.

Well assuming they deliver the K-1 in April as promised, it seems like a good plan. It would be better to wait for a sale or for used bodies to show up on the market, but all I'm saying is that the price of this thing isn't too out of reach. I was worried it would be over $2000.

Does that mean the lenses won't have the advertised F number when you equip them into Full Frame?
>>2771915
Most likely, they'll vignette heavily when wide-open. I know that's the case if you put some DX Nikon lenses on FX bodies. (IIRC the 35 1.8 is one of them)
I'll bet that some will provide full coverage when focused close but vignette at infinity, too.

For a long time it was known that the wide-angles couldn't cover a full-frame. Some reports said that the widest lens that covered full-frame was the 40mm. Possibly the 35mm too. I think theses lenses might cover full-frame but ricoh might be taking into account how well it covers full-frame. Maybe they have too much vignetting and aberrations in the corners unless stopped down.
I think they should have just left these lenses alone. They were never advertised as full-frame. Imagine someone sees that Ricoh advertises these lenses as compatible with K-1 only to be disappointed. They should just advertise them as crop-mode compatible. If anyone wants to venture to full-frame mode that is solely on them.

>>2772693
Better transfer rates direct from camera.
I've tried numerous USB3 readers and ultimately I find it better to pull direct from the camera.
Every card reader I have ever used - and there have been a few, some supposedly good ones - do this thing where the data transfer speed is highly variable, and almost always has long periods of no activity where the transfer just pauses for a while. The camera never does this, produces a consistent (iirc) 20-25MB/s and ultimately gets the files from body to drive faster and more conveniently.
Also, a seemingly trivial thing: Less minor long-term damage to card, contacts and card door.
These cards have ZERO fingerprints on their contacts, and therefore none on the body's contacts.
InB4 you say thats ridiculous. In my experience it's better to have the rubber-hinged USB cover break off through thousands of opening and closings (it's a rubber plug and doesn't need the hinge anyway) , rather than in any way damage the card reader door, slot or contacts.
Becasue USB2 I used to take my K5's card out, but after using two of them for years I now prefer to even use the USB2 on the k5 than bother taking the card out.
The k3's USB3 is a no brainer.
In both cases it's quicker and far less dicking around.

The D800 went on sale in March 2012.
Let that sink in for a bit. The camera Pentax users are so happy about they finally have - they could have the same thing in 2012 if they didn't care it had a Nikon label on it.
Apart from having a Pentax mount, how does this K-1 uniquely differentiate itself from a camera that came out 4 years ago? What does it bring to the table?
Happy to eat my words, but I don't see anything to get excited about.
>>2772712
So the D800 and D810 are outdated?
>>2772712
And Nikon still charge $1000 more for the the same sensor 4 years on.
The only new sensor in this segment since then is the 7RII's 42MP BSI, which you can forget about getting it in a package under 3k.
Camera industry as a whole have been slowing down and not overly exciting these days.
Only 10+ years behind everyone else.
Oh but it's got LEDs so yay I guess.
>>2772724
How are they different?
>>2772726
They aren't the same.
>>2772727
They seem the same to me. It's sony's 36.x sensor that is in their A7R, the d800, d810, and now the K-1. You say they aren't the same, I would like to know how you arrived at that conclusion.
>>2772729
The D810 has noticeably worse high iso performance, but more room in the highlights.
