I like the first picture, but maybe the sky is a bit overexposed?

This is the best advice I can give anyone. If you achieve this you'll become a great photographer.
I've been reading the comments and none of them are helpful. Forget about technique, exposure, composition, gear, none of this shit is useful. In fact it will make your photography boring. It doesn't matter if the house is on the right or if the sky is over exposed. Forget everything you thought you knew on how a photograph should be.
When I look at you images, I don't see you, I learn nothing from you. And that is all I care. I feel like i've seen your images before, there is a lot of people taking the kind of images that you take. Don't try to achieve something you know to be pretty. The best thing you can do is to make a mistake. Stop checking the back of your camera, lose the tripod, trust your instincts. There is a world only available to you. Your friends, your family, your town. That is what I would like to see, you. The things you do, and the things only you can see. Every person has a different story, tell yours. Do you see yourself in your pictures?
I used to be very much into technique. Now I try to forget everything they taught me to follow. I try to achieve this by using a shitty point and shoot film camera. I can carry it around everywhere, i don't care if i lose it, break it, or get stolen. It doesn't have a screen so i need to trust in my intuition, i can't make corrections on the go. I am not saying this is the only way, but since i've tried this my photography has become more personal, and it has made me happier.
Don't listen to the guys that critique your image based on composition, that is easy. The only thing that matters is the guy behind the camera.
>>2767758
Fair point but I would have to disagree somewhat. Minamilist/monochromatic photos can be a great to look at and I always enjoy seeing them. Even if they have been done before I always appreciate whatever time and care went into them. The lack of overt humanity doesn't bother me at all.
Not OP by the way.
>>2767758
Not everyone wants to be a faggot who wants to express himself through unpleasant photography. Some people want to take pretty pictures of things.
>>2767772
Unpleasant photography? I shouldn't have to say that what i wrote is my opinion taken from my experience. The guy is asking for critique, i gave it to him, i took a lot of time and spoke from my heart. You, on the other side, just call people faggots.
>>2767777
quads
>>2767777
You didn't give critique though, you gave a generic speech about how he should do a completely different kind of photography. Your post was a lot of words that fundamentally said nothing.
>>2767777
>I shouldn't have to say that
Well when you say "stop taking pictures of pretty things" it comes across a bit demanding, perhaps. I know a guy with a perspective similar to yours irl, and he always says the same thing (stop taking photos of beautiful things in good light, photograph what you "feel" instead). When he said it, it sounded more like he thought his opinion was fact or something...i know logically you shouldn't take it personally but it was hard because he was my mentor, but kept trying to push me in what I thought was the wrong direction.
Anyways, I like seeing impactful photos of people too. But I also feel great emotions when I am out phtographing a non-human, non-personal thing. I feel connected and inspired by those things just as much. I dont just follow a formula of composition or light quality, although those things are fun because I use them to challenge myself when out shooting.
>>2767781
Critiquing a single image is worthless. Critiquing a body of work is much more enriching.
>>2767778
Nice work on a board with 1 post/hour
>>2767786
Taking pictures of pretty things like a flower (or whatever) is perfect, i have nothing against it. What i actually said was "Don't try to achieve something you know to be pretty". It is kinda vague, what i meant was "don't play it safe". I am not against minimal or abstract photography, but sometimes i feel that people try to make something they've seen before somewhere else. If he likes that type of photography he should go all in with it. I also had a teacher who thought his opinion was a fact and he was all about technique. My words sound a bit harsh now that i read them again, i would rather have this conversation face to face while having a beer.
>>2767794
>don't play it safe
Appreciate that, that's actually a lot more helpful.
And yeah, mentors can be stifling sometimes. Gotta do your own thing and take what they say with a grain of salt.
>>2767802
Exactly, don't even take what i wrote too seriously.
>>2767777
OP here
I actually appreciate your comment, I'm not into photography since a long time and I'm beginning to question what I want to say with my images.
I also believe though that you don't necessary need to forget everything about technique to express what you want to see. I really like pictures from Ghirri, Shore, Kander, they may be boring to somebody but I think I can see the spirit in which those were taken. I might be trying to imitate a lot of people now, that is probably true and I will take your advice.
Can I see some pics of yours? I'm really curious about what you mean by pictures that made you happier
Thanks man!
>>2767787
But you didn't critique the work at all, you just wrote a fluff piece about how he's doing the wrong style of photography. There isn't a single aspect of his actual work you commented on, your post could have referred to any group of images ever posted here. Again, lost of words that didnt really say much.
>>2767813
I am glad you appreciate my comment. I believe that technique comes with time, and very often what we are taught in the beginning is only technique. Educators should encourage one to take pictures, and when you can't express yourself due to a lack of technical knowledge then you should learn the technique.
First 3 photos are from when i started. Last 3 are from now.

you're not bad... it's just.. there's no subject. Also the position you're in i'm guessing you just sat down, took up your camera when no one was looking and shot a picture.
I feel like photography is more of a story. you know you're taking a picture... if you're going to share that picture... it should tell you things.
still you'll get better if you keep shooting and figuring out what makes your photo weak.
set goals. like, i want to shoot landscape, i want to shoot random people. i want to goto this event, this art. think of it as... i want to bring my camera to this place.
also have some sort of thought of what you want to convey to people.
you'll get better as you go

Ask yourself what you want to show about the products and the look you are trying to achieve. If you had a large softbox (or even an umbrella) you could achieve the following:
https://magazine.zonerama.com/how-to-photograph-shiny-products-and-glass-products/
If you want to convey a rugged knife, try getting a wood table or something ala the image posted (not mine).
Product photography should make someone want to buy a product, your image needs more DOF to get the blade in focus among other things.
Detailed close shots can work if you are displaying something interesting about the knife. Strong curves and lines would be a good starting point, I feel like your shot is a bit 'meh'.
>>2770155
If you can take a bracket shot separated by 1 stop each, ensuring in the darkest shot the outside is within 1-2 stops of blowing.
This doesn't always have to be done with the intention of HDR, but it will allow you to get a range of exposures you can dick around with later in LR or PS. If you can't get the exposure right after than (ensuring to process a RAW file) then you should be able to do some wonders with HDR.
If you are more confident at judging light you could also expose for the outside without bracketing your shots and bring up the shadows in post. Every new body I use I find myself having to use HDR less and less as the ability to push shadow detail is really quite remarkable.
The rule to remember for shot like this is "Expose for the highlights". Don't worry if the shot looks like junk in your camera, when you run it through LR all will be well.
Some further reading to teach you some of the finer points of this methodology:
http://www.anthonymorganti.com/2013/10/01/exposing-highlights/
One caveat that is not mentioned in that article. This process can make sensor noise VERY apparent. Shoot at a low ISO (not hard if exposing for highlights) and be prepared to have some detail loss (very dependent on your camera). On my D70 (circa 2005) for instance I could hardly do this. On a D7000/D800 this is much easier.
