I tried closing aperture down more, but it ended up being blurry because my tripod is shit.

Here's a protip that I didn't know for months and it's so simple... but on my Canon, if I switch to video mode, stop down, and then remove the lens, the aperture diaphram stays stopped down, so I'm not shooting every macro at 1.4. The difference was huge .

no, with the lenses without aperture rings, at least my pentaxes, they all stop the lenses down to min aperture when you disconnect them from the camera body. so if you want them at a certain aperture u have to set your camera to that aperture, use the depth of field preview and disconnect the lens. for lenses with aperture rings, there is no problem.

Personally, I use cheap macro extension tubes. They give me the result I want and they only cost about £15 (~$22) so they're not exactly breaking the bank. Pretty sure you can get them for any camera fitting too.

These are pretty bad.
You guys need to really work on better lighting, and either stopping down your camera for better depth of field, or learning about focus stacking.
A shallow depth of field macro can work, but you need to choose the subject and backgrounds carefully.
