The GR is a toy, they say.
This motherfucker of a picture was shot on a GR.
>Best picture of 2016 so far
Post your GR shots in here, faggots.

into the garbage it goes.
So, is it a good first camera for beginners?
>>2754718
No. It is for people who know what they are doing.
For a first camera get a DSLR.

>lightly tweaked in VSCO Cam
>VSCO Cam

but muh raw
>>2754730
Ricohs jpegs are so good that you don't even have to shoot in RAW mode.
I like my GR and all but honestly who gives a shit? The GR didn't take the photo, the photographer did. He probably could've taken the photo with any damn camera he happened to have on hand because he put himself in the right place at the right time with the right idea. Meanwhile I also have a GR but I did not take the best photo of 2016 so far because I was instead sitting on my ass a thousand miles away from any snow.
>>2754747
because when you take part in the ricoh meme, you can be a part of a group
>>2754720
What about a Ricoh lends itself to only being for someone who knows how to use a camera? It's incredibly simple and easy to take photos with.
A DSLR isn't always a great starting point for people.
>>2754720
What if I dont want to lug around a dslr
>>2754759
Then use your phone like every other philistine
>>2754761
So a GR wouldnt be better than a phone?
>>2754762
Not for you, no.
>>2754762
its always good to start with a cellphone
i first got into photography when i first got a cellphone last year. I though hey i now have a camera lets try it out.
i used it until i felt like my needs were being limited by the equipment i was using, then sure get a gr.
>>2754771
>GR user in a nutshell
>>2754771
>its always good to neuter yourself from the outset
I started with a point and shoot and quickly went to a DSLR - don't dick around with camera phones, just get on with it.
>>2754771
I've used a fucking phone. I'm talking about buying a camera.
>>2754786
Don't get a GR for a first camera. IMO it's more for someone who already has a good camera, but wants something they can carry around all the time.

Let me give some background. I shot with my phone for years and I bought a Sony NEX5R a few years ago. Between a sensor issue that could not be rectified, and the infuriating menu system, I didnt use it as much as I could have. I recently decided to sell it and buy an x100t. I like the x so far but i'm wondering if I could have saved myself some money and have something more pocketable in a GR2.
I have no desire for a DSLR, I rarely changed out the lens with the Sony and ended up using the most pocketable of thr bunch.
>>2754794
Get the GR2 then. It will be a handful at first but when you work out some of its unique features you will love it.
>>2754794
If I were you I'd keep the X100. My GR doesn't see much use since I got an iphone. I'm considering replacing it with an X100t.

>>2754825
The X100 series has a 35mm equivalent, family member.
>>2754711
Tbh, I think that's a really good photo, regardless of your politics for posting it.
>>2754821
Eh. The GR is typically held at an arm's length, while the x100 is held to the eye.
get fuji x70 instead.
>>2754715
He used VSCO cam that's why. I don't know why he didn't just make the snow white/grey shadow.
>>2754973
I like it. It's called artistic license.
What's that you ask? The opposite of autistic license.
>>2755011
>artistic license
fuck off
>>2755014
Hahah, you will fail as a photographer.
People don't want to see reality.
>>2754711
Shot is saved somewhat by it's relative uniqueness, but it really could use a better camera.
That image quality is just not at all good, unless you compare it to smartphones rather than what midrange never mind the best photo gear can crank out.
>>2755041
Tool ape in denial about tools mattering.
>>2754771
>i first got into photography when i first got a cellphone last year
Are you 12?
>>2754756
Because the GR in particular has no zoom. You're stuck with a fixed focal length. You might as well just use your phone before dropping another 500 bucks on a fixed focal length p&s.
>>2755070
>what is walking around
>what is cropping hq images
>>2755070
>babby's only lens is kit zoom
Get some primes anon, it'll make you a better photog.
>>2755092
The GR is not an interchangeable lens camera. That is that person's very point, that with the GR you only have one focal length, ever. That is why it is not suitable for beginners who may have no idea what they wish to do.
Please inform yourself before commenting.
>>2755079
Those things are not necessarily replacements for different focal lengths. Foreshortening is reduced with a longer focal length.
>>2755095
Oh wow, i'll really miss my foreshortened photos
>>2754836

>>2755095
Zoom lenses made me lazy when I was new. I'd just point, zoom until it looked "good," then *click* and put the camera away. It wasn't until I bought an x100 that I forced myself to learn what a camera actually does - because I had to.
>>2755114
A zoom lens only makes you lazy if you are already lazy. And you only learned what a camera does so late in the hobby because you are also stupid. American education?
>>2755117
I doubt i'm alone in the situation I described. Why do you have to be so angry and dickheaded about it? I'm describing a real life scenario in which a zoom might not be a good first camera. Is there a particular reason that makes you mad?
>>2755121
No anger here other than your own. There is a reason why all beginner cameras come with a zoom kit lens. A beginner does not know what he wants, does not know the key differences between focal lengths. A beginner just wants to take photos and he primarily needs to learn exposure and composition first. Finding the right focal length for his subjects comes later.
What you described is the pretentious "purity" bullshit thriving so much on this board and on most forums. Try giving a camera with a prime lens to your friends to take a few photos, they will stand around and try to find the zoom, because they don't know better. They won't complain about your 28mm equivalent lens when they try to take a portrait. They won't complain about lack of bokeh or distracting background.
Telling a beginner to start with a fixed prime lens camera is the worst because sooner or later he will more likely to complain the camera sucks because he needs longer lens.
You think you are a special snowflake going around with your chosen camera and think everyone is just like you. Just stop and think for a second, if people are the same as you, what would be the reason to employ you? why not the other guy?
Just get off your high heels and let the newbies discover photography on their own way, with a little guidance they can learn. Maybe you can also learn something from them.
>>2755131
I learned exposure and composition woth my zoom camera. When it came to learning more I never felt the need because I got comfortable. Again, I doubt that's a "special snowflake" situation.
>no anger
Kek, sure thing buddy
>>2755136
You are right, it's called being a lazy bum.
Generally not wanting to experiment and getting out of the comfort zone, I find it is hardly a lens fault. Stop projecting your own failures on objects and start working on them. Start with admitting your own faults, it will make everything a lot easier for you.
>>2755139
Or perhaps you could allow me to recommend an alternative path to finding motivation for those who find themselves in my situation.
Not everyone needs to do everything exactly the way you did.
>>2754711
>Post your GR shots in here, faggots.
>>2755142
>>2755141
There are lots of things you can't get close enough for a 28 or 50mm equivalent lens. Photography is not just about street and lanscape. Try shooting an event with a prime only, try shooting a race or a hockey match with a wide angle, try shooting wildlife and birds with a 50mm only.
You can't, there are lots of situations where you need a zoom. Lots of generic everyday situations.
A prime lens won't make you a better photographer, this board is the best proof of that. Learning to think and planning ahead will make you a better photographer.
>>2755145
You need to know when to use what gear, anon. A GR is not a good all-round camera. It is, however, a good camera. Just like a prime is not a good all-round lens, it's still a good lens, and it's much better to use a prime in appropriate situations than, say, bring your zoom and keep it at the same focal length all day.
And yes, a prime will absolutely make you a better photographer. I'm not going to regurgitate, just literally google "does using primes make you a better photographer?" and read until you understand.
Using primes made me lazier because I could just bokeh the shit out of anything I didn't like instead of working on composing an interesting background
>muh 45° angle of a flower with no background
>>2755156
Thats why different cameras are better for different people.
People need to stop pretending there is a one size fits all, one right way to gear and photography.

If you can't be assed to carry a GR over your smartphone, what on earth makes you think you'd actually use the X100t? Sounds like wishful thinking, imo. It would sit there collecting dust just like your GR.

The GR is a camera I used to have with my everywhere. The X100t would be a camera to take out shooting.
i'll probably just stick with my xpro1 anyway
