Im hella nervous about my first photography job. It's a 10 day yoga retreat in a beautiful area, I have access to pristine wildlife, gorgeous people doing interesting things, and I'm shitting myself that I'm not ready.

How was your first gig? How could you have improved it? Let me learn from your mistakes.

Please rate a few of my photos and tell me where I can improve for the retreat.

My gear: Nikon D3200, shit kit lens, nikor 1.8G 50mm, and 70-300 telephoto/macro nikor, tripod, and lightroom. I know my gear isn't epic mode, but it gets the job done.

Doesn't look bad to me, anon. The colors /skin tones of the first image are great. Lighting is nice as well. If I were you, I'd shoop out the stretch marks and also that bit of thread that'd hanging down her thigh. Other than that it's a nice photo.

That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me on /p/ haha thanks...
I've been reading lots of photography text books and online tutorials trying to learn myself, but it's a slow process.

You're welcome.
Seriously though - I really like what I am seeing.

>>2751829
This one is very nice, too. Totally love the colors. But then, you can clearly see the limitations of the sensor inside the D3200; Some of the highlights are blown .. which, surprisingly, doesn't look half bad in this case.
>>
>>2751831
>ethical pussy
ffffff

>tfw ur some vegan bitches main source of protein
>>
>>2751821
These are good.

My advice:
Bring 3 of everything. 3 cards, 3 batteries. 3 of anything else you need.

Things go wrong far more often when you're in a high pressure setting.
>>
>>2751843
I have a 32gb card, and I'll be able to charge up everynight, I'll go buy a couple extras though, thanks :)

>>2751821

>>2751831
bruv if these are your images I don't think you've got anything to worry about. I'm sure your client will love them. Some of them are a little soft but nothing that's not correctable.

>>2751848
my advice would be to keep a feedback loop open with your client over the course of the 10 days, like every evening give them a quick rundown of the photos you took that day and ask them for feedback on what they want done differently.

But yeah buy extras of everything, especially if you're isolated. Maybe even grab a cheap point and shoot for the unlikely scenario your D3200 shits the bed. You can always return it after the 10 days if you never open it
>>
>>2751874
Thanks man, this gives me so much more confidence. I've been posting here since I was....18! Wow, 9 years. And I think I'm finally being accepted as a photographer.
/p/ is my ultimate role model with photography.
The feed back is a good idea.
I'll have my Samsung s6, is that suitable for a backup?
>>
>>2751874
Yeah your images are pretty good anon, have fun

I second what this anon said though, for pro work always have a backup camera, either rent one or borrow from a friend something that works with your lens
>>
>>2751848
Take extra cards, its not about the size, its about 'CARD ERROR' and not having a chance to get another one. And the client asking you how its going, and the colour draining from your face.
>>
>>2751831
damn f1.8 but everything is real sharp

how do?
>>
>>2751901
Nah, I wouldn't use a phone. That'll look super ghetto.

Do you have any photographer friends who might let you borrow an old camera?

Or you could do like >>2751874
Buy a cheap-ish one and just keep it in the box. Take it back if/when you don't use it.

Might I say, it is quite inspiring to see that you've gotten such a cool gig. Makes me feel like keeping it up, man.
>>
>>2751928
Buy a good lens. Not really another way.

Pick 2: Cheap - Fast - Sharp
>>
>>2751928
deep dof because of focusing distance
>>
>>2751937
But the nikkor 1.8g 50mm is what he took that with and it's not expensive at all

I like a lot of these pictures, the only thing i really miss is an humble smile though.

Calm your nerves, pressure fucks with your performance. Think about the job as if you were doing this in your spare time, like hobby photography.

Otherwise you're doing well, experiment with some different angles.

Here's a quick picture i made with my phone a few weeks ago. Had to make a storyboard and couldn't be fucked to whip out my actual camera at that moment.
>>
>>2751831
I'd there a filter on the lens here? Which type?
>>
>>2751937
Cheap & Sharp.

I need both, Zoom & Prime for Canon.

I currently have the 18-55 & 55-250 kit lenses that work OK for now.
>>
>>2751931
or he could rent a camera.
thats a thing that you can do.
>>
>>2751928
Also its a cropped sensor
>>
>>2751940
Yeah I got it for 280 aud, pretty decent lens for the price. Manual focus is pretty touchy. I've made it a challenge to only use the 50mm some days, it makes interesting photos, but I definetly miss out on some shots.
>>
>>2752031
Just a uv filter, some weird clouds going on in the background, and the moss was ultra vivid which is what brought me to that spot after rock climbing on the cliffs in the area.
>>
>>2752065
>50/1.8
>$280
Holy cunt, are you retarded?!
>>
>>2752068
He said $280 Australian dollars, which would be $190ish USD. Pretty decent price, $20 cheaper than B&H.

Don't know what the fuck you're talking about mate
>>
>>2752065
50mm is literally the best focus ever made. no distortion. fast as fuck. razor sharp most of the time. itsy bitsy depth of field.

your a nigger
>>
>>2752068
Aud bruv, USd would be about 200. Australia is expensive
>>
>>2752071
50mm always seemed a bit long for me. 35 seemed more like the sweetspot to me, wide but not ultrawide. 50mm seemed to lose context for me
>>
>>2752074
use a full frame
>>
>>2752065
If only you had Canon, you could have saved yourself $100~. The Canon 50mm 1.8 is only 197
>>
>>2752093
I shoot film, always FF baby.
>>
>>2751821
Since nobody has offered anything actually constructive, I suppose it's up to me.

If you don't know what you're doing to the point where you're worried if you can perform or not, you're not ready. Tell the organisation that they need to hire a real pro. Pass the job on to another photographer, as long as they bring you along and teach you.

The gear doesn't matter, but you owe it to a client to not be using a bottom of the barrel bag of kit. It's likely that someone could spend less on that kit than actually hiring you or even just your expenses, and get a similar result. Of course a nicer camera makes things easier too.

Get a cheapy film body as backup. You'll get hipster cred with the yoga chicks, and have something to fall back on without breaking the bank.

>>2751821
Background is way too busy, and still shows nothing of the location. It doesn't tell a story at all.

>>2751823
Pretty cheesy. Lack of face frustrates my eyes. The cardigan hanging is distracting. Get lower, frame horizontally, move over to her left and catch the sun on her face and show more of the landscape.

>>2751825
The blur in the water isn't long enough, nor sharp enough. It's so in the middle it looks like user error. Pose sucks, framing is too tight.

>>2751829
Having each subject facing out of frame from an extreme edge is a no-no. I also need to see where they're looking. Foreground shit adds no story.

>>2751830
Get underneath more, catch the moment during a big stretch. Show context i.e. where he's going.

>>2751831
No subject. Even just a tiny human element would improve this photo 1000x

Overall, colours and processing are nice, and you seem able to take advantage of nice light.
>>
>>2752117
>The blur in the water isn't long enough, nor sharp enough. It's so in the middle it looks like user error. Pose sucks, framing is too tight.

my thoughts exactly its pretty uninspired
>>
>>2751823
This looks weak as hell (cheesy)
>>2751825
Moar blur, or less. That small amount looks like user error more than anything.
>>2751829
Don't like how the subjects are facing out of the frame when they're already so close to the edge, but with that exception I do like this one quite a bit.
>>2751830
Really like this one
>>2751831
Looks a bit oversaturated but otherwise extremely nice.

I would say you have little to nothing to worry about, OP. Keep it inspired, pay attention to framing (avoid overbusy backgrounds, make sure tree limbs aren't coming out of your subjects (unless that's the goal)), and avoid overdoing the postprocessing
>>
>>2752117
Thanks for the feed back, I really appreciate it.

I'm going to be attending the workshop as well, my friends are the ones organising it so I'm helping out. It's experience for me, and photos for them. Mostly instagrammo and flyer stuff. But I want to get some for my portfolio...
Thank, these critiques really help.

I know, I'm strayan myself.
But $280 seems like a stupid price for a 50/1.8.
I only paid $425 for my 1.2 Ai-S.
Gumtree actually had two EM's with E-Series 50/1.8's attached for $50 a pop the other day.
