These are always the best /p/ threads because they showcase just how needy and insecure most of you are on top of being barely old enough to grow a mustache. It's like the cherry on top of all the bullshit that spouted here on a daily basis.

the first one is much better
>>
>>2754436
Please replicate this shot with a little more headroom, black background, blackout clothing, and low key lighting. Try some cross lighting, and the standard 45 with a rim light behind.

For added effect, wet the (rubber?) for shine.

Unless you're using it for a specific effect, wide angle portraits look like dogshit.

Wait, seriously though, what's your gripe here? That people who consider themselves aesthetically worthy post in a thread about how people look? Or that I'm pointing it out? Or that I have a tripcode to be easily identifiable to filter out/be accountable? I honestly can't tell what about that post made you so mad, anon.

It was taken during a nicely lit fall week in the Finnish archipelago sea national park.

You'll want a boat.

I have some real images from the trip (haven't processed the images until now), but am not that comfortable sharing because i consider myself to be mostly snapshit tier, even though I've been doing this for a number of years (for my own enjoyment).

I suppose I could get a Flickr or something for the less terrible ones, or post a thread if I manage to scrape by more than 5 at least mildly interesting shots from the set.

You can be pedantic about the terminology all you want, but you know exactly what he means. Some people are creative, and take a photo that takes a bit of thought, and tells you something about the subject. Some people point their camera at the nearest mirror and snapped a lazy shitty shot.

I think though the selfie definition means self portrait, colloquially we understand selfie to mean an autistic snapshit in front of a mirror or made with a phone on a stick and a self-portrait to be something with more thoughtful composition maybe using a timer or remote that does not feature the autist holding their autist box.

Jesus christ what a bunch of whiny, meme spouting fucks you children are.
Selfie and self portrait is literally the same thing.
If you're gonna pretend it's some elevated art to use a fucking timer then you can take your camera and shove it right up your ass.
Paint me a fucking picture of yourself, then you can talk shit about others taking the "easy" and "thoughtless" route.

good. selfies are for teenage tumblrtards.
>>
>>2763850
Awww, I guess mine is a selfie then.

Semantics aside, though, I do think people should hold themselves to a higher standard than your average mirror selfie on a photography board.
>>
>>2763847
The important factor is not the timer, it's the environment, wardrobe, idea behind the photo. "stand in front of the mirror and be sure most of your body is in the frame" is not a PORTRAIT. It's not a PHOTO. It's not anything worth sharing. Fuck, why does /p/ fight so hard against the idea that maybe you should put some fucking thought into an image... I will never understand.

These are the only images that should have been submitted to this thread, because they are the only images that anyone put even half a fucking second into. Take some fucking pride in what is supposedly your passion.

This. It's about the intent behind the photo. a good self-portrait is an exploration of identity, a crystallization of one moment in the continuum of your life.

A selfie is "hey this is what I look like pls call me good looking"
>>
>>2763896
So trying is some ridiculous concept? Any effort at all makes it special to you? I mean, I'm asking rhetorically, because I've seen the photos that make it to the board, and the answer is obviously yes, but jesus christ, to argue for the virtue of taking a snap with no thought, energy, story, or plan is insanity. Every mother fucker to ever post a photo taken without effort should be posting that photo with text full of shame, and nobody else around here should let anyone get away with it. If we all want to improve (Which is ostensibly why we're all here) why not embrace the nudging towards quality, rather than railing against it? Do you actually want to improve? or do you want the standards of art lowered to your bare-minimum level?

These are portraits in the most literal sense of the word. The word goes back to Old French: to paint, depict. As a technical term in the world of photography, it specifically refers to depictions of people. Usually that implies a great focus on the head only, or the head and the shoulders... there are many ways to do it.

...but who the hell cares? All of these are bad photos. These are not interesting depictions of people. They are not even interesting selfies.

Forget about "artistic merit". There is no art here whatsoever, and these photos also fundamentally fail at communicating anything whatsoever. Taking them was either a waste of electricity/data or a waste of film.

Please think before you even pick up the camera, and think twice or thrice before you press the shutter. :| /p/ is a fucking joke.

A "portrait" has effort put in. A pleasing environment that fits the image. A wardrobe chosen for the photo. Styling. Composition. Lighting. Overall polish.

A "selfie" is "Oh I saw a mirror, and I was holding a camera, so I took a shot with myself in it.

Basically, one is how an artist would approach a photo, and one is how a guy who whishes he were a photographer would approach a photo.

The amount of effort put in to create and perfect a photo is a major issue all over this site, which would explain why you are feeling confused. Most of /p/ thinks that seeing something half-interesting, and getting it more or less in the frame, is all it takes to be a good photographer, and only the choice of camera settings differentiates success from failure. In reality, it's the ability to slow down, have an idea, grow that idea, put that idea in a place where it works best, and then use the camera in the best position and timing to convey it all to the viewer.

The successful "portraits" in this thread:

Yeah, no. Definitely not even close to a requirement.

Nope.
>Styling.
Nope
>Composition
Technically it's impossible to take a photo with no composition, but I won't be that pedantic because I have a real point. I will conceed this.
>Lighting
I'm going to disagree with you here because I believe you're referring to a specific kind of lighting which is patently not necessary for portraiture.
>Overall polish.
Again no.

You're confusing glamour with portraiture. Now, I do come from a slightly different place in believing that a portrait must illustrate something about a person beyond how they look, but even if we ignore this element, I still say you're far more wrong than right.

Raw, ugly portraits that capture less than ideal aspects of a person are just as viable of a portrait as a team trying to project a specific aspect of a person.

Note, I'm not necessarily disagreeing that what's posted here isn't mostly lacking, but I am saying that your view of what portraiture is is fucked (that is you're mostly right, but almost entirely for the wrong reasons).
>>
>>2766240
You're confusing lazy shit taken by someone who only pretends to care about photography for actual photography.

A portrait does not have to be beautiful to have thought and effort put in. I didn't say pick flattering clothes, or pick beauty light, or pick the richest looking room in your house. I said pick things, and put effort in. You can pick your dad's 60 year old suit that's three sizes to small, go stand shin-deep in a puddle of mud, and light in a way that shows off your fifth nipple and weird belly button hair. But effort is still required.

>watch me flip everything that I've said in clear text earlier in the thread now that I've been called out

A portrait simply needs an idea and its execution. What's needed to execute it varies widely.

Like the problem with many of the pictures here isn't any technical merit, there's no idea behind them beyond "take a picture of myself". The problematic ones aren't communicating anything more than what they look like. No amount of "don't need effort, an appropriate environment, wardrobe choice, styling, composition, or appropriate lighting" can fucking make up for the lack of an idea.
>>
>>2766253
>watch me flip everything that I've said in clear text earlier in the thread now that I've been called out
The fuck are you talking about? Where did any of that get "flipped"?

The original statement was:
A "portrait" has effort put in. A pleasing environment that fits the image. A wardrobe chosen for the photo. Styling. Composition. Lighting. Overall polish.

Your replies were:
>not necessarily
>Yeah no. Not even close
>That fits the person maybe
>Nope
>Nope
>Sort of I guess I'll give it to you
>Again no

So go ahead and explain the confusion there.
>>
>>2766253
Sort of like what was said here:
>>2766218
>In reality, it's the ability to slow down, have an idea, grow that idea, put that idea in a place where it works best, and then use the camera in the best position and timing to convey it all to the viewer.
>>
>>2766253
>No amount of "don't need effort, an appropriate environment, wardrobe choice, styling, composition, or appropriate lighting" can fucking make up for the lack of an idea.
You choose those things around your idea. Notice how bolt cutter guy had an idea, and yet he executed the idea in a hoodie in his living room, and it doesn't fucking work.
>>
>>2766260
So you want me to spell out how you've your head up your ass?

>Effort
Art is never measured by effort. Just because something is easy/low effort to achieve does not suddenly preclude it from being artistic, just as something being ridiculously difficult to achieve does not make something artistic.
>pleasing environment
No. Just flat out no. Hell, Environment doesn't even necessarily come to play in portraits. If you include it, it needs to thematically fit, but that's by no means "pleasing"
>wardrobe chosen/styling
Again, clothing doesn't necessarily show up at all and the level to which both of these appear depends entirely upon intent.
>Composition/lighting
These literally go without saying because they are integral to *any* form of photography.

When you list these things the way you do, you're implying a level far beyond the fact that they are basic elements.

Look at pic related:
Yes, she has a wardrobe that she selected for herself that day as her way to present herself to the world, she "styled" herself like that, but there's no styling and no wardrobing going on here. It's the photographer recognizing an expressive image of a person as they were. There's no lighting setup, there's no meetings to decide on how to project x or y image, there's no stylist or styling notes, there's no instructions of what to where, but there's still an evocative, effective portrait.

Your pinning portraiture into this small corner of what the entire genre actually is and ignoring the elements that make it truly important. You bury the idea, the intent of the image after all of these production factors that aren't necessary in anything but the most autismal basic of senses (clothing existing=wardrobe).

>>2766264
Sort of isn't exactly. Like I said, you're right, but for the wrong reasons. You have no understanding of what actually makes a good portrait. A strong fucking portrait can be made *inspite* of the production elements you named going against vision
>>
>>2766291
If that photo were of a girl in a t shirt, in a typical middle class American bedroom, with top down can lighting, composed like a selfie, it wouldn't have been a successful photo, and it certainly wouldn't have been on the cover of National Geographic.

yes, she chose that wardrobe that morning, rather than for the photo. But the wardrobe tells us a tremendous amount about the person in the photo, and makes it exotic to a normal western viewer. The environment is also fitting to the photo, and helps to support the brilliant colors of the image.

For some reason you seem hung up on the idea that I said that you need to have the very best and most expensive and most flattering of everything, and that isn't the case. Having the most APPROPRIATE of everything to suppor the photo you want to take is what's important.

There is no lighting setup, but there is very pleasing light that suits the image well. There were no stylists, but she is well styled to communicate.

The photographer chose her from 5 billion people on the planet because she was in the right place, wearing the right clothing, expressing the right thing. If you're not willing to choose the person (the way McCurry did) because you're shooting yourself, then you need to put yourself in the place that expresses what you want to express.
>>
>>2766301
I'll be reasonable for 4chan standards and allow that you and I might actually agree more than disagree, but I'm hung up on this because the way you are talking about portraiture is giving the impression that the only way to do it is like a Vanity Fair shoot which while is an awesome part of portraiture to play around in, isn't the only form there is.
>>
>>2766321
>the way you are talking about portraiture is giving the impression that the only way to do it is like a Vanity Fair shoot
>A portrait does not have to be beautiful to have thought and effort put in. I didn't say pick flattering clothes, or pick beauty light, or pick the richest looking room in your house. Yeah I definitely get that impression from statements like this...

Or maybe you're just too /p/ indoctrinated and have a good time deciding what people are saying, and then fighting that straw-man to the death rather than actually thinking rationally about what you're seeing.

You're literally attacking the statement: put in more effort into your portraits, in this thread. Go look at this thread and tell me that most of the issues aren't that people aren't putting in any effort? Effort to come up with an idea, effort to execute their photo, effort in processing it to make it finished, etc.

Nowhere did I say anything about making something more beautiful, or more perfect, or more "vanity fair". I merely said, take control of your images, and do something with your photos, and do things to support your concept. Less effort leads to "oh a mirror, better point my camera at it, okay here I'm done"

If McCurry had not put in any effort, he would have been at home in his back yard taking photos of bees on a shitty flower at 1pm. The effort he put in was to go out and find Afghan Girl. There were other people there who looked like middle easterners. They were not making that face. They were not wrapped in those colors. They were not bathed in that light. They were not wearing distinctly "foreign" clothing with tatters and wear.
>>
>>2766337
cont

He did not take their photo, just like most of the people in this thread should look at the person in their viewfinder, and see a totally bland looking guy, standing in a bland looking room, in poor lighting, with absolutely nothing remarkable going on in order to motivate a photo being taken. When you see that through your viewfinder, there's no reason to take a photo. Let alone to post it in a "self portrait" thread.
>>
>>2766337
>I merely said, take control of your images, and do something with your photos, and do things to support your concept. Less effort leads to "oh a mirror, better point my camera at it, okay here I'm done"
Except you didn't.
>>
>>2766362
Just because you didn't read it that way on your trawl through the board looking for things to argue with to seem like you know what you're talking about doesn't mean that that's not what was said. The only value statement made was "pleasing environment" and even that wasn't intended to mean a sunny glade, it was meant to suggest an environment fitting with the image you're trying to create. The other statements were "You need to pay attention to wardrobe, lighting, composition"
and you argued with it.

It did. Your malfunctions with communication aren't my fault.

No, they patently were not. You can add in words all you want to now. It doesn't change what you said.

Oh, you can't. Face it anon, you were being a pretentious dick, got called out for it, then changed your tune to something reasonable. It's cool, you didn't have a trip on. No need to attempt to save face. All you have to do is walk away and you're the only person who'll ever know.

Nah, you're absolutely terrible at communication if you think those are equivalent sentences.

It says literally what I've said it says and doesn't at all say what you intended it to say. There's no reasonable argument you can make to twist that square into that round hole.

>>2766435
The idea is too reductive and too reductive in the wrong direction. Through implication, it places higher importance on tangible aspects of production and reduces the importance of intangibles like intent, expression, and interaction between the photographer and subject. This isn't to claim that there's not importance to these factors, just that it's a cart-before-the-horse mentality akin to those who just repeatedly parrot "USE RULE OF THIRDS" or some similar shit.

Taken as he explained later, it becomes so vague it's an entirely pointless utterance along the lines of "take good pictures by taking good pictures".

Oh, I wasn't saying his English grammar was wrong because of the construction of that sentence, I was saying he was bad at English if he thought that the sentence he quoted was the same as the other sentence.

>I keep repeating myself while pretending this hasn't been done and explained more than once.
>>2766476
Focus on taking a new one. Try to think of cropping as a tool of last resort (the only exception to this is changing aspect ratios). It's best to be in the practice of only using it when you physically can't get the framing you want for the completed image. .Like most general statements there are exceptions to this but for the most part you want to maximize the quality of the file you get to work with (otherwise why spend all that money on a body and glass), so yeah.
>>
>>2766490
How would you crop that one?
>>
>>2766505
Hrm...tighten in and move him to the right third line maybe?

I don't really see a good crop to be honest...just a little turdpolishing. What kinda breaks this picture in terms of working for me is the position of the dog. I think I'd like this better if it were taken from lower, and rotated around to the left from where the camera is now to open up a little more separation between the dog and the subject.

Or

go portrait orientation, rotate to the right to close up the space between the dog and the subject...

But, if I had to just work with this image, I'd generally close in and stick the guy at around the third line on the right of frame.
>>
>>2766515
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Nice to get some actual advice here.
>>
>>2766520
Eh, it's not super good advice. Here's some better advice:

Read up on the use of space, tension, and balance in composition. Admittedly, shooting yourself and trying to include your dog can make putting this stuff into practice fairly difficult, but I'm positive that if you've the slightest bit of visual literacy, you could look at that picture and tell that something quite wasn't right about it.

Remember, most kinds of photography are more akin to poetry than they are novel-writing. Economize and use all of the space in the frame you can to support your image. If it doesn't support your image get rid of it (this isn't to say don't use negative space, but that if you have it, have it for a reason and use it).

You look like a flaming douchebag in that picture (and even just the very idea of it seems to tick off my d-bag flags), but I'm sure you're a wonderful human being who rescues puppies from burning buildings.

So, why the headdress thingie and the meme-y colors? What do they add in your mind?

As a general thing: almost always keep light on eyes. You might have to use a snooted light source, but don't stick eyes in complete shadow like that unless you're looking to dehumanize your subject or put emphasis on something else for some reason.

tbqh, I think the fact that my shoulders interrupt an otherwise smooth drop of the headdress (kinda like the Bent Pyramid) fucked the portrait up.

>So, why the headdress thingie and the meme-y colors? What do they add in your mind?

I think I might have used a predetermined filter in iPhoto (from my former 2008 MacBook). I used the headdress because I love Orientalism and because I wanted to see how textiles could meld with natural patterns. I wanted my facial profile to be buried in layers upon layers of manmade patterns. The wooden backdrop is from the back end of my shitty dorm cabinet, I just sat in front of it. The light source was a fluorescent bulb directly over me (I have a tiny room so there was no other choice).

I didn't focus on the face because shit lighting and so I could emphasize the shape of my whole body profile. At that time, I had only used the camera, my first, for less than a month.

Thanks for the advice, senpai. I need to get the camera out, haven't done so for a while. You can see where it was edited from here, complete shit haha

I don't think that's as much of a problem as you do. Honestly, I didn't even notice it.

>textures
You honestly need to start playing with lights to really get a feel for textures. With some work, you can even get away with using flashlights. Hotlights, strobes, monolights are obviously preferable, but you gotta work with what you've got and such. Always remember, you can use mirrors to double light sources with a little clever placement (you'll still be a victim of the inverse square law, so light power is still a thing, but yeah).

When lighting for textures, light them as obliquely with as hard of light as you can to the texture you want to highlight, then shallow out the angle or soften the light to de-emphasize it. Different textures will obviously react differently so there might be a fun deal of mixing up hardnesses/directionality of lights. It can be a lot of fun to play with.

But to the d-baggery, a slightly up angle, neutral expression, plus eyes in mostly shadow is the same kind of setup they use to make people dislike villains, make rappers look hard for album covers, and the like.

>>2766562

What can you do to make the subject appear that he has gravitas? I shoulda thought of using a flashlight...

I suck at selfies. This isn't really a "real" self-portrait, just me experimenting with techniques and angles for doing them, but it's about as good as I have.

You can go with a similar approach but not hide the eyes in shadows. Keep some measure of connection/humanity. I'd say you'd want to also use harder light to emphasize drama.

Check out these and how the light was used:
https://www.instagram.com/portraits/

Note that a lot of gravitas comes from the subject themselves (the Norman Leer shot versus the Ian Mcellan one) and even a "seriously" lit shot can be goofy (the Kevin Smith shot).
>>
>>2766571
Pay attention to your backgrounds. The computer screen's ok, but that shadow/blurred out wire coming out of the left of your head is hella distracting.

Don't frame this kind of pose like this. Go tighter and just head and shoulders it or go wider and show more of what's around.
>>
>>2766577
Yeah, the background was just throwaway, I did it tethered to Lightroom so I could get instant feedback.

I'll try different framing next time. Space is pretty constrained where I was working and it's also a real bitch to focus for these shots, so I left it where it was.
>>
>>2766609
If the environment sucks, why don't you move?
>>
>>2766612
