A lot of people don't like Stephen Shore's stuff even when they do know who he is.
I won't tell you why it is good, but I will try to give you some info so you can decide for yourself.
Shore considers photography a reductive art. In contrast, painting you start with an empty canvas, and you decide what to put in the painting. With photography you start with a full camera, and you choose what to exclude from your photo.
Another thing Shore believes is that part of what makes a photograph is the the photographer's perception of what makes a photograph. An extreme example that he uses in his book is a photographer that only considers sunsets to be worth photographing. Consider the various genres, like birds, cars, etc. Some don't consider these worth photographing at all.
Shore knows his stuff, even if it doesn't look like it. I saw an interview with him, and he was talking about how a lot of his photos were one point perspectives, no different than some old landscape painter that he named, so some times he'd try to break perspective. He also mention that he left things in the fame, like that car, on purpose, to date the photograph.
He was very influence by warhol's factory, and 'making decisions' He was also a very early color photographer (which was a decision he consciously made).

Keep in mind that he shot with a view camera, so the original prints probably look way better than these crappy scans of slides taken from books (which is true of most of the stuff in this thread as well).
