Just pretend you don't speak the language. It works well, just remember to look confused if they call you a non common insult.
If someone says something like this to you on the street then you're probably a little bitch. Try getting /fit/ and maybe people will be less likely to stand up to you.
Just be confident, don't shy away, and be more willing to walk up to people than they are to you. I never feel bad taking a photo, if it makes someone want to approach me I'll approach them too and we can talk it out. This is also a good way to to prevent/negate someone running up and clobbering you.
For what it's worth, it rarely happens to me. If I really need to talk to someone I tell them I'm a student and it's for an assignment.
Never, I've even gone out at night with a flash ala charlie kirk and have only had people having a laugh with me. It'll happen eventually though, it happens to everyone. OP you have to realise that your images are more important for the most part than their feelings. That doesn't mean you dont respect them but you have to approach your work as a professional in terms of dedication

shutter speed was set to 1/10 sec handheld, so there's that. it's garbage for multiple reasons but i still laugh seeing that guy getting so angry at me and i figured it fit in with the theme of people getting mad at photographers on the street.
/p/, I have a question that is related to this but the other way around.
I was shooting a couple of people in an alley tucked away into the city when some old guy came in with his point and shoot camera and started shooting. I told him "Hey, I don't care if you wanna take pictures but you should probably ask these people if they're okay with you taking their photo" and then the guy took a picture of me.
I guess he wouldn't have looked so guilty if he didn't snap a pic of me and start taking more pictures aggressively to get us bothered, but whatever. I felt like I tried handling the situation as best as I could (hey you can ask them if they don't mind having their photos taken).
Is there any other way I could have handled the situation? Put yourself in the shoes of P&S guy and tell me how you would've liked being told the models would not mind having their photo taken if you asked.

Yes. You kindly STFU and mind your own business. Or would you like someone to start bitching at you and trying to police what photos you take? I guarantee that there is someone in the world that we can find that will object to any photo you take and you'll be all "B-b-b-uut my rights to take photoss are being suppressed."
You sound like you're 13. Grow up. If someone objects to having their photo taken they can say so themselves, otherwise you're just trying to fuck with other people's actions to satisfy yourself only.
I find that people will only get offended and all "Muh copyrights/safe space" if you use a flash.

In-your-face flash isn't really my thing anymore (I just don't do it that often now), but it's a good exercise to practice getting up close and moving quickly. Try it out sometime. There's a short window of time (feels like half of a second) from when you're noticed before the subjects start to react and change their pose and postures, so take advantage of that if you need to.

several times, and I'm not a 'street' photographer. hood rats in san francisco for some reason bothered me, they left after I was nice to them and bullshit with them for a bit. had some homeless guy in panama hassle me after I took a picture of a street he was hiding in (I hadn't seen him, and he accused me of spying?)
talked with him and turns out he was from new york. switched from my shit spanish to english and told him I'd buy him booze but not food, since I was going in to a sit down place and didn't want to bother with a doggy bag. He went away after I a) calmly treated him like a human being, and b) was confident and laughed about his concerns. I'm a nice person and connect well with them, even when telling them off, so it's not a problem. Just relax and be nice, you'll be fine.

Some people want privacy. You're going up to someone and taking a photo of them without their permission, or without revealing your intent for the photo to them at all. Do you even realize how creepy that is? By reading the posts in this thread, one can surmise that the people who defend this are either internet edgelord "I have a camera so I can do anything I want" types or too autistic to realize the wrong in this. Take all the street photos of open areas all you want, but if you want a close-up with someone as a focal point, just ask. You'd be surprised at how many people are okay with this if you ask politely. I doubt most people would be ok with someone taking a photo of them, let alone not knowing there faces will be posted without their consent on an Anglo-Japonic file sharing website. Personally, I stay away from street photos because you don't know about the subject you're photographing. Could be a socially anxious agoraphobe, or a paranoid liberitarian who likes privacy, or someone under the witness protection program, or someone who doesn't like strangers silently taking their photo for no apparent reason. Then again, this is /p/, so that mentality of "I have a camera therefore fuck you" echochamber will persist. If you so desperately need a close-up on the street, get a friend or ask a willing stranger. No owes you anything because you're an amateur with a camera, so respect people's privacy.

I have a bigger objection to the fact that I cannot walk more than 1 minute from my house before I am on video. If you want privacy, you should live innawoods.

individually yes, but what's the collective name for many of them with a similar themes or in a series? An installation? That sounds too professional for something that's going on my bedroom wall
How the fuck does this guy not get punched in the face on a regular basis? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkIWW6vwrvM
>>2720653
Because he'd probably punch back. He's intimidating to look at and he's got a bit of an attitude. Chances are if someone's getting up in your face with a flash and a camera they probably aren't too timid
i feel bad for gilden. he has a really diverse body of work and all people know him for is his flash in the face stuff.

It has happened to me, but only in the place I least expected it.
In Venice (Italy) people are used to it, so I was surprised when a dude started screaming to me.
Funny thing is, the dude was completely fine with having his picture taken (I took a few of him), but as soon as I decided to take one of a father and his daughter docking a boat he started screaming, everyone got stressed and I didn't manage to take a nice one (the first and only one was badly timed) and so it was a shitty moment in an overall nice day.
Pic related (non edited raw to jpg).
I still do it, but it hasn't happened again.
Kinda related, there was also this one day walking on the street a photonewb snaped a picture of me walking, I was wearing a leather jacket that day and there was a sunset so I guess she found it aesthetic or whatever.
I looked back and noticed she was spilling spaghetti all over the floor so even though I wanted to see if the pic was alright, I just left.

seriously tho, going up and saying "smile" works like all the time for any amateurs looking to try it.

There is this feature on GR series that you can recover the photos that you delete as long as you didn't turned off the camera. I found it to be pretty handy in ugly situation. If you're getting yelled at, approach them and delete the photos up in their face, recover it later. You get the photos that you want while stays civilised. Win!
On the other hand, has anyone been using Sigma's merrill for street shots? I'm very tempted to get one!
>>2722010
sigma is 2slow4street
>>2722012
Really? Is it for the action or the low light?
>>2722018
It's for the shutter delay, the lack of light, the focusing, the write speeds, the battery life, the no reason to have that much detail...
>>2722010
>There is this feature on GR series that you can recover the photos that you delete as long as you didn't turned off the camera.
waht
How do you enable it? This opens up a whole new world for me.
>>2722041
My bad, it is not until you turned off your camera, but rather until you haven't go out from the image preview menu
This how you do it:
- go to image selection
- delete photo/s
- (((do not back to shooting mode or do other stuff)))
- push the menu/ok button
- then there's the recover file option
It would worked out too on the scenario I mentioned earlier, you'll just have to be more careful with the buttons
for the note I'm using GXR with P10 unit. So, being the lesser premium one, I think the GR would also have this feature.
>>2722020
ah right your last point really got me thinking.....but the colours man....

http://petapixel.com/2015/12/15/these-2-street-photographers-deal-with-angry-people-in-very-different-ways/
I have a question concerning street photography, specifically using a DSLR with a 50mm f/1.8 - what sort of settings do you use to get shots of people walking past, in motion, and how to get zone focusing for these shots?
>>2722601
use the kit lens taped in a fixed focal lenght. ie. 28mm
>>2722611
Would it be better for me to use the stock lens and set it to 35mm?
>>2722611
>wat
what i said, fagget.
>>2722698
So your serious answer to "how do I zone focus with my 50mm lens" is "use a kit lens at a totally different focal length with tape on it"
And you feel so confident in that answer that you are also insulting me for questioning it.
>>2722702
>So your serious answer to "how do I zone focus with my 50mm lens" is
my serious answer is "you dont". as i said he should tape 28mm-35mm.. also f11, disable autofocus, set burst mode, prefocus at 1.5mt and be there.
>>2719421
Such a good ruined pic :'-(
My first time on /p/
You guys sound really obnoxious and arrogant. It's weird how you people think objecting to having your personal space violated is crazy
>>2720602
You ruined this photo
>>2722876
Crazy? no. But legally unfounded? yes. In public, you can be photographed. The end. Black and white.
>>2722882

>>2722884
Morality is entirely subjective.
>>2722876
You're filmed constantly in public, anyways...
You know I never go to /p/, I have no real interest in photography, and ended up here by boredom off the front page. Honestly I didnt even know you guys had a board. Yet reading this has completely convinced me you are all creepers.
It is one thing to take photos of public avenues, people going about their lives. It is entirely another to walk up and stick a camera in their face because 'lmao I has a camera'. If you cant tell the difference, you are clearly either A) extremely maladjusted and a societal outcast or B) far, far too used to whatever artistic hugbox you belong to. If you cant tell what is right and wrong based on etiquette, personal space and intent then you deserve the slap to the face / broken camera / ass kicking you will eventually receive when you do this on the wrong side of town or to a man who cant be assed to put up with your frankly childish bullshit.

contrary to popular belief, taking photos of people you don't know without their permission is something only level 5 untouchables do.
it IS weird, and sooner or later someone will probably tell everyone at your local bar you're a creep or actually physically assault you.
