These are great, especially those wavy trees. So eerie.

One thing I'd like to work on in my camp/hiking photos is the start and finish - I take loads of photos once we've set up camp or started hiking, but none of the prep before or the packing up after.

I think it'd be cool to get a couple of different images at the start/finish to emphasise the feeling of seclusion and immersion in the forest - maybe you and your friend on the bus with your packs on as you leave the city, or walking along a road before you get into the national park, your boots outside your tent...things like that.

Good photos, tho. Melbourne area looks mad. I can't wait to get down there.

Thats a good idea. I actually did set out to achieve something like that with this trip. We drove up from the city, and I started taking pictures from when we started packing the car, also along the way at the small towns, and setting up in the carpark at the start all the way until we got home. I was trying to encapsulate the whole trip and the feeling of excitement and adventure as well as the feelings of immersion and seclusion once into the forest. Unfortunately tho i just didnt execute it well, but hoping next time it'll work better.

>what'd the gov do to ya?
i lived there for 5 years. i was working (teaching). anyway, i got off my 457 sponsorship visa and switched to a student visa, so i could get my master's degree which would make me permanent at work and would descure my permanent residency status. my masters was 2 years full-time and cost about $100k. When i finished my degree the gov't changed the rules and i no longer qualified for a visa with my degree. with a few weeks notice i lost my job, home, everyone and everything i knew, - my relationship ended, my friends and professional network all gone etc - and had to leave the country with nothing and nowhere to go. i've been effectively homeless in the US ever since and with the amount of debt i have my life is basically over. and i have an advanced degree from a foreign country.

absolutely ruined my life, permanently.

I don't think the shots with the girl really belong here. Unless you do what >>2707964 said, which would introduce her as a character we can relate with. Great for the memories box or whatever, but in terms of lolart they just dont fit in. In addition they are all the same composition (person in the centre surrounded by trees). Try and mix it up a bit.

Of the remaining 5, you had a good start with >>2707681 and >>2707682 - which just happen to be mirror images of each other - and >>2707690, which I think is the pick of the bunch.
Then the sun came out and destroyed your blacks in the final two shots D:

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I understand its somewhat of a mismatch of photos. There are two that I plan on using in a bigger set of photos from the aus high country for "lolart" purposes. But this set, as is or part thereof, I was planning on (maybe) sending to a local website along with a write up for a section they have on good nearby walks.
re: them being all the same, how would you have done differently? maybe I'm too comfortable with what I like in this sort of environment
what do you mean by the two being mirror images? is that a bad thing? I was almost thinking of displaying them as a diptych as pic related.

I guess it makes sense to include the person if these shots were intended to showcase the walk. They would certainly work better when accompanied by some text.

Regarding how you repeat the same composition, look at:
>>2707679
>>2707680
>>2707686
>>2707687
I scribbled over the main elements of these images and averaged them together to illustrate how similar they are.
Try moving closer or further from her or placing her over to one of the sides.

And regarding those two images being mirrors of each other - it's not a good thing or a bad thing, its just a thing. I wouldn't put them together like that though

increase exposure slightly
increase contrast slightly

why would I ask why they wanted to know? cause, its pretty obvious. It seems you're referring to the exif request earlier and i guess you're the salt baron himself here too >>2710603. Normally I dont post EXIF because in my mind having the viewer know the settings/gear/everything is completely pointless and only really serves the kind of person who spends there days checking nikonrumors and shitposting in the gear thread. But seeing as you're acting like such an insufferable twat I'll end your tantrum by just giving you what you want

>>2710739

>>2710740
If this is still the salty salt baron then I'm actually worried for yr mental state tbqh. You're way too hung up on absolutely nothing. That anon was not me and he was unhelpful because he couldnt answer their question because he couldn't take the photos. Sorry to explain it so thoroughly, but your comprehension skills seem to be a bit blunt so better to lay it all out and avoid further confusion, eh?

attempt #2, hoping the exif is attached this time
>>

>>
>>2710963
>. Normally I dont post EXIF because in my mind having the viewer know the settings/gear/everything is completely pointless and only really serves the kind of person who spends there days checking nikonrumors and shitposting in the gear thread

Pretty new to all this and long time lurker but when browsing /p/ for practice I like to guess what I'd shoot these at and then compare what I'd do to the exif, think about why I thought that way and then think about why they thought to use those settings to compare to my own

Not a lot of great stuff to go out shooting so when I plan a trip I can keep an open mind about all the ways I've seen people shoot things and try them for myself

Just a bit of perspective because I can see why you'd want to omit exif but it's really helpful for people trying to find their own way
>>
>>2710966
You're approaching photography in 100% the wrong way.
>>
>>2710997
How should I approach it?

Not trying to be condescending by the way I'm genuinely curious as to how this is bad

>see a photo someone took
>try to use the knowledge I've learned to make an educated guess as to how to take this photo, or did the processing
>see if my process was similar
>see where personally I would have differed
>experiment with a new perspective
>>
>>2710999

Ignore him. Do whatever is fun for you m8.
>>
>>2710999
You're not even looking at the photos.
You're trying to decode them technically.
Look at the compositionally instead.

>>2711001

>>
>>2711001
fun is taking pictures

>tfw finding neat subjects in literally nowhereville

>>2711002
I commented mostly because I felt like the technique in these photos was interesting and that's where I'd take a look at the exif and make some guesses

I can look at the composition without exif. If there is exif I can both study the composition and technical side
>>
>>2711002
Oh also I forgot to mention that if you have any pointers on how to break down composition I'd love to hear them as well because as you say I'm going about it the wrong way there's probably a right way or a process to do so

I quite liked what this anon did and I've been applying this idea to breaking composition down>>2710118 along with trying to draw 'lines' as to where my eyes are drawn to get a sense of the flow of things
