Thoughts on these lights? I'm not a fan at all. I think most of the people that use them are pretty hacky and portraits taken with them look really off and not natural. The ring reflection in the eyes is very creepy.

I thought that shit was used for macro photography, never seen someone use it for portraits.
Isn't that what they use on amateur allure?
>>2699246
It has to be. The eye reflections can be seen clearly on AA and several JAVs

you're joking, right?

Seeing as portrait photography has never interested me in the slightest, no I'm not joking. My apologies for not being so knowledgable about a subject I couldn't give a fuck about...

Calm down. There's no need to get upset.
Mines GN16m, works nicely at moderate to close range.
Lacks some granularity in it's TTL department, so exposure can get blown, but it's very useable.
The type of light is a preference or not, it's good at a metre plus, but less than 10 or so becasue redeye kicks in, and at longer distances it tends to light up the air a bit, so you start seeing a bit of atmospheric illumination at some point.
Very good for macro.
Very good for not needing to care what way you have the camera rotated and what might be blocking the flash but not the view when shooting amongst people with heads everywhere.
If you don't have one and can afford one that doesn't suck they are just another interesting toy thats nice to have access to.

Oh, and the always on LED ones are similar but different to an actual flash.
Both useful, but the LED ones are generally shit by comparison for all the things that matter.. unless you are buying one of the huge expensive portrait beauty dish LED arrays.

I have a YongNuo one.
It's for macro and it's pretty great.
Flash looks nice, plus it has a build in modeling light to help with focusing/composition.
Only downside it doesn't work at extremely close distances (less than 2cm), which is when you really want some light.
>>2699270
Those are different, much larger ring lights.
The small ones are intended for macro only.

Do you have any portraits taken with it?
i hope to get this one at or around xmas. i love macrotography but lighting problems ruin every goddamn shot
The large diameter one (like a foot or more across) are sometimes used in high-fashion. I can't find it now but I swear I saw some dude with one that was around 50 inches across - it actually looked like he had bolted 16 flashheads to a circular frame. The halos around the eyes, I think, are slightly more appealing than the smaller ring-flashes

>it tends to light up the air.
You've been upside down too long, air isn't reflective.
Dumbass bogan cunt.
can work well enough

I'm not a fan of the catchlights, anon.
I tried this edit and it doesn't feel any better - just wrong for a different reason.

What op posted is a macro light.
A ring light (for portraits) is much larger. If you're taking portraits with a light designed for macro work, no shit it looks bad.

No, why would I take a portrait with it?
It's for macro.
>>2703622
That's a shit idea because the distance to subject negates the size.
