why no nikon?
>>2697951
Had an old film Nikon that I sold because reasons, and decided I wanted to try something different.
I keep the 400D around in case a family or friend needs to borrow a camera.
mine is only the k200 which i got for a few euros.
the rest is part of a collection i got from my grandpa. there are a lot more slrs, compacts, 6x6s and a ton of pk and m42 lenses. nothing special except a limited, two fa*-lenses, a beautiful edixa and a voigtländer

It's not agile enough for run & gun shooting, even though a gorrilion times faster than the 645D. I mostly shoot events/report and in studio so each has its purpose.
But yes, it was very much worth it, IQ-wise it blows the Canon out so hard it's not even funny; forget HDR even exists.
Alas, I haven't had the time to do some serious non-work photography with it yet, so I don't have cliche dramatic landscapes to show off.

found in my father's storeroom a Zenit 11.
have no idea how this camera works, i read some guides, cought something about f-shutterspeed-iso but I've no idea if this camera works. he bought it for 2€, 20 years ago. Looks fine but still, how can i figure out if everything's ok? should i take off the lens and see if anything "moves" in there when shooting ? any tips?

>>2698057
You should look at some videos on how to operate the Zenit, as I recall, there is a specific order you have to set up in or you risk damaging it. Or maybe that was for the Zorky rangefinder? Hit up youtube and see.

@2:58, when i shoot without the lens, without a film too, just the camera, empty, nothing closes, like in the vid. excuse my poor english.
this means the camera is broken, or it happens because i've no film inside the camera?

FE is cheaper, and compatible with all my lenses (some are non AI). Its analog electronics will fire the shutter for exactly how long it needs to. If your exposure needs 1/185 s then that is what the shutter will give you.
People say it gets quite interesting at very low light. The FE will even fire its shutter for over an hour if it needs to.

>>2698277
ME and OM both lack manual speeds, ME has a light leak, I don't have any good Pentax lenses, and I dislike the controls (bigger problem with the Super A, whoever the fuck designed this thing). OM doesn't even have a separate compensation adjustment, instead you have to fool the auto mode by changing ISO setting, which is cumbersome to say the least. That said, I've never shot a single roll with the OM, don't even know if it works properly, though it appears to be mint.
I don't really know how Pentax or Olympus lenses perform, I hear the former has some good primes, but I'm not really willing to get another pile of lenses when I already have everything I need for the Minolta. I'm a plustek-using snapshitter anyway, no point in trying to max out the sharpness.
>>2698302
You're using a 50mm lens, why would you get an M2 over an M3? The only advantage of the M2 is that it has 35mm framelines, the M3 is superior in pretty much every other way and they cost about the same.

It all gets used. I'm not a fan of swapping lenses out in the brush. Often there is no time with wildlife, either. So I generally take 2 bodies, sometimes 3 in the summer when I do more macro.
All of my secondary gear is DX, to keep the weight down. Typical day out:
D610 + 600 f/4 for wildlife (permanently handheld)
D7100 + 105 for macro (side sling)
D7000 + 10-24 for landscape (sling pack)
Depends on what I'm doing / where I'm going / the weather though.
It's a real commitment lugging around all that weight for hours on end, and I find it rewarding. Also, keeps you in shape.

Well, just about in every way... obvious resolution difference aside, the significantly higher DR and low noise make images look incredibly smooth, and you can comfortably go to ISO12,800.
On my 5D2, ISO3200 looks merely tolerable and shadows would turn a green hue if you lifted them up, but on the Pentax noise is always monochromatic, well-distributed, and shadows don't discolor when applying recovery at any ISO.
Meanwhile, shooting at ISO100, you can easily push +5 stops without any meaningful increase in shadow noise. As I've said before I haven't had the need to shoot an HDR as of yet.

How do you like the 645Z? What are the most noticeble differences beside sensor size?
>>2698981
I like it a lot. It feels pretty much like a regular DSLR despite having that chunky mirror box which makes it about 2x deeper than the 5D2. The huge grip and good balance make it very manageable.
One big difference is the rather dense control layout that seems to intimidate people who haven't used one, but after a year of hard use, the 5D actually feels more clunky to use whenever I go back to it. The camera has pretty smart automation, such as locking up the mirror for you when using a timer.
The lenses do render differently than small format, even though the sensor isn't that much bigger, like having a smoother focus roll-off, meaning that you get a greater impression of having stuff in focus than there really is.
The 85L, and fast small format lenses in general, tend to cut through the scene like a blade and you can tell where the focus plane is even on a thumbnail; if the nose and ears are not in focus you can really tell it. With the 150mm wide open a person's face will appear to be mostly in-focus, but as you get closer you realize that the amount of DoF is actually similar.
Pentax lenses do have more CA than I'm used to, but overall clarity is otherwise pretty incredible; I've stopped pouring over charts and shit a long time ago, so I won't go into technical details. Results look fantastic and that's all that matters.
>>2699055
>pouring
*poring
As in examining the pores.
As to the difference between smaller formats though, when I shoot MF film, I feel like the most noticeable change is the way depth is rendered.
Even at small apertures, the plane of focus will be crisply delineated from the rest of the shot, with just a subtle change in texture.
Pic related was taken at f/11, for example. Focused on the fence, which is at least metres away.

Why do photos from pentax 645D and 645Z look so bad? They always look like the results you get from a point and shoot. Yes, at web resolution most things look like point and shoot photos but even the colors are dull. Is the camera just accurate to real world colors and I'm just used to the surreal colors of most of the photos I see? I thought the pentax 645 were going to be great cameras but when I looked at sample shots they looked downright awful. Is the point of the camera just having a better image to work with during processing? The sensor is not that much bigger than 35mm and not even as big as 6x4.5.

Nope but the 24mm 1.4 Art and a 281.8g Should cover it ok.
>No 35/1.4
Yep 35mm 1.4 Art over on the right hand side with the 24 art and the 28g
>No 55/2.8
Do you mean the old 55mm Macro that the 60mm macro replaced when they discontinued the 55mm AF? I have a 60mm 2.8 AF-D ans a 40mm 2.8G AF-S DX on a D7000 in the back row. I think i'm covered.
>No 14-24 G
I do have the 18-35 G on the D800.
I did see one on the local craigslist cheap recently. (under $800) Sooner or later I will.
I do have a 10-24 Tamron that covers full frame at 14mm and up. and a 16mm 2.8D fish-eye that lightrooms distortion control fixes up pretty good if I want rectilinear.

Nah I have some canon stuff too. Want to see?
>>2699059
Darn auto correct. Yes, textures are much better defined, and you can see this in many comparison samples online of say the 5DSR and Z, just find some samples with cloth in it and be blown away. It's no surprise that fashion photogs prefer to use medium format, I never really quite understood it till now.
>>2699187
I agree, you have to hang out in MF-specific forums to see anything worthwhile.
The problem is that people don't process their photos enough/properly, the Z for instance puts out extremely bland RAW images that you have to work on to get the most of. The pic in the post you quoted was of course just a snapshot, but nothing was blown or crushed in the RAW.
Pic related is what SOOC looks like compared to a finished image. If you're a dingbat and leave the image as-is, of course it'll look terrible. I wasn't too fond of the 645D's output because it was too "baked", while the Z is like taffy, you can do anything to it and it won't break.

Old pic. I can't help myself when I spot a good deal at goodwill.
In my defense I shot with almost all of them.
>>2699331
I actually started with canon and switched pretty early on. I had more but have sold or traded a lot of it off.
So a couple film rables and a T2i
Some mid range zooms and kit lenses.
a 40 pancake and a niddy fiddy.
And I still have that nice TC for sale if anyone is interested since I don't have any fast zooms for canon anymore I sure don't need it.

Which rables are those? can't quite see the markings. My first film camera was an EOS 2000, and still have it somewhere...
>>2699280
That makes sense. I'm aware I have this problem were I judge a camera by it's photos. It's helpful sometimes but I know it's not always accurate to determine the potential of camera equipment based on a few photos from flickr. I do feel less pressure to get use something that I haven't seen good photos from.

Rebel G date back and Rebel 2000

Because FE is $150, FE2 is $200, and FM3A is $500+.

Going to Japan on Monday, hoping to hunt down a beater FM3A for cheap.
I'll be travelling all over the country, so I won't be limiting myself to the big fancy Shinjuku stores.
I'm >>2703325
Also hoping to add a Contax to the collection (maybe an AX, because it's fucking insane), a Konica Hexar, a New F-1, a GW690, a GA645, a Bronica, a Pen F, and Maybe a Zeiss Ikon.
We'll see.
