What do you think P? Color, or black and white? Took a poll on instagram, and so far it's 2 for color, and 15 for B&W. Harsh criticism is welcome. Location: 20 miles north of area 51

Have you ever considered they both might be shit?
>color tbh fam, bw does nothing for this picture
>>2692067
Colour, no doubt. B&W brings out the cacti up the back and fades out the subject. All that black and white achieves is to appeal to instagram "hipsters"
>all this boring sky when theres a rich textured shrubland there
srs fam what the fuck. worst picture I've seen on here all day, regardless of the pp
Color. No contest.
You must think so too, otherwise you'd be taking instagram's (shitty) opinion.

Care to give some structured criticism or suggestions? I'm really not sure what you are trying to complain about.

Its poorly composed, a poor scenery choice and poorly edited. Why place the main cactus in such an awkward spot, and especially so close to that blown out patch in the sky? Its just muddled and distracting.
Use a wider angled lens and shoot from a height more, as to include more of the shrubland infront of you, and to give the image more depth.
Colour.

The Case for B&W:
-B&W "forgives" blown skies better
-The sky begs for a higher-contrast processing
-The other "green bits" in the image take attention away from the subject
-The foreground is about texture
-The color really adds nothing very important to the image
The case for color:
-You can clone out the distracting green bits (esp the one foreground, center)
-The blue/brown contrast from sky to ground is actually pleasing
-The green bits in the subject tree are kind of nice
I think the blown out sky makes this an automatic B&W if it was my image.
>>2692094 Sorry for late reply, 4chan kinda broke last night.
Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted. You've got some valid points, I realize now that the placement of the Joshua tree next to that patch in the sky is uncomfortable. I suppose including more foregound would help, thanks for the constructive feedback.

Those greens are my fault, I made them pop a little more to add more contrast to the scene, so I'll tone it down a little. Probably the best feedback I've gotten so far, thanks man. The dynamic range of this scene was just too wide, my camera couldn't really capture it. Trying to recover the highlights in post looked really shitty, so that's why I let the center blow out (although only a small portion is actually clipping). I'll work on it more today though, for both versions of the image. Thanks again.

Is the sky blown out because of your editing? or because you shot it that way? It seems like you may have upped the contrast in the sky, so it might just be your mistake, in which case, you should correct it.
The shot is pretty bland overall, and there's a lot of texture, but it's just busy texture, not pleasant texture, so the B&W doesn't have a lot going for it, other than people who don't know photography like things B&W better than color, because it's more "artsy". The color could be more pleasing, with some good color editing, if you're able to do it. If it were my photo, I'd be pursuing the color version.
So I took all your feedback and improved the photo as much as I could, how did I do guys?
