These are actually nice, a little too saturated for my taste and for some odd reason the guy looks like he's copy/pasted sorta. Chill out with the saturation (unless in print it's going to take out the saturation) and you got some nice images for your senior portrait.

For some reason part of my post went missing. But OP, if you understand what why chromatic aberration happens you'll know where to look. Also, the OP pic is blown out to oblivion and it makes me feel bad because it would've been a nice picture otherwise.

Were you using reflectors? He looks slightly illuminated in some but not fully, suggesting you weren't using flash or external light sources to illuminate him further, because your biggest problem to me is that your subject is consistently darker than your background. This is resulting in problematic shadows across his face.

Right, that explains why one half of his face is always brighter than the other.
Composition and posing aren't bad, but you want to work on your lighting.
Sometimes one half of his face is brighter, causing odd looking shadows to form on the other side. Sometimes his whole face and body are just underexposed in general.
If you want to do portraits you must have serious control and understanding of lighting.

AE and contrast btfo! Too much light in the sky, use a graduated ND filter here. for portraits consider getting a lightweight foldable reflector to move some light in on the subject. focus and clarity are perfect, but you might want a longer lens or move closer to cut out some background. DOF is nice, I like the amount of detail in the setting.

No, you don't need better 'glass'. You can buy a better camera when you learn to use the light around you to compose your shot. Raise your aperture a bit and use something a bit more sane than f/1.7. If you really want to spend money, buy a bounce board. I found one on amazon for $17.

It's not the glass, your gear is fine. You need to get better at lighting and directing your subject. If you're properly lighting a scene - no matter if it's achieved via reflectors, natural light, strobes, ect - you'll be doing less editing which makes the images look tacky & unappealingly saturated.
Don't worry about blown highlights in portraits, unless the highlight is the persons skin. A blown out sky can look more natural and soft if taken at the right hour & wide-open.
Have you subject move around more, interact with the environment.

quick question on etiquette, is it generally considered ok to post photos you took for someone else in a place like this? or post anywhere else? What if they paid you for them?
I've seen reddit threads like "was a photographer at a wedding and I snapped this lucky shot, thought you guys might like it". And I always think, "hey! that photo belongs to the people who paid you to do the shoot" or something like that.
Am I unreasonable? how does /p/hoto approach these situations and how do you guys feel personally about those type of things?

Rarely is that actually the case. 90% of the time, the photographer retains all rights to an image. That should be the end goal, at the very least, or else they wouldn't have much of a portfolio to show anyone.
One big exception is commercial work, especially of a time-sensitive nature. The client then retains rights to the image, and the photographer is contractually restricted to certain usage.
The other big exception is when you publish an image (as in, use it in a commercial publication with wide release, or use it for commercial purposes, such as advertisement). In that case, you need to use a model release. You can't just snap a photo of someone on the street and use it to advertise Dr. Pepper without their consent.
In terms of etiquette for non-published images? That's up to the photographer. It's a polite thing to ask someone if they mind if your photo ends up on 4chan, but it's not a requirement.

He's got a D7000. His 50mm will act literally like an 85mm lens, FOV wise. An 85mm lens will act like a 130mm which is pretty much optimum for head shot, or top-half shots.
