this is called a "tent". it's marketed pretty much solely to hipsters who have to be different. instead of sleeping comfortably above the ground in your hammock you actually put it right on the dirt and sleep on the ground kek.

On the mountain, they're effectively one-time use. Pull that handle, you're without protection the rest of the day unless you brought a second cylinder.
And if you had to pull the handle, you've already made at least one bad terrain decision, and the snow conditions are obviously slidey. Not a good place to be.

Pieps/BD has an electronic fan-based airbag system, that pack design leaves a lot to be desired and I think some of the electronics will get ironed out as that technology matures, but that system currently gives you four guaranteed deployments on a full-charge. Easiest bag to repack too, can do it easily on the mountain.

I'm not a water guy, but I was under the impression the life vests were repackable/rearmable similar to these airbags.

carabiner. ive only ever seen them Keychain sized
>>
>>810543
I have one of these that has a carabiner instead of just that shitty hole in the top left and i use it with my anchor trolley on my kayak, that way if my anchor tangles i dont have to undo a knot i can just pull it loose

Other than that tho i cant think of a good use for it that would save you any time or effort, maybe bear bags but theyre easy enough with just rope. Im sure theres a few uses when rock climbing
>>
>>810592
Well just about the only use i could think for that is to hold my keys, which a regular carabiner does just fine
>>
>>810590
did you just make this or is ground kek really a thing?

that's because in a real carabiner the load is along the spine where it is strongest, and they're able to be opened while loaded, instead of concentrating all the weight on the hinge of the gate where it is the weakest and putting the load on the gate making it more difficult to open when loaded. that's why this design is only in gimmick size, because it can't be trusted with any real load.

>How much does decent air bag run?
I would budget $1k USD for one. Some like my Highmark Pro and the Pieps bags are more (1200-ish), BCA has some around 600.

>any manufactures I should look for?
One that fits you well and comfortably, with a pack design that meets your needs.
It's a big investment, if it's not comfortable on you or doesn't work as a pack you probably won't wear it. If you're not wearing it, there's no sense even buying one. Try them on with your gear before you buy one. Even better would be to demo one on the mountain in your preferred sport.

BCA's the least-expensive. Solid bag, couple different varieties for various activities. Their comfort has improved a lot in the past few years.

ABS has been around the longest, with the best protection system (Explosive trigger, N2 cylinder, and individually-valved dual-airbags). Advantage with these bags is the "zip-ons" - you buy the airbag protection harness and "zip on" the pack you want. Can get everything from a zero that just covers the airbag part, to a 45+5 for when you need a lot of shit.
Not as easy to service/maintain because of the trigger and cylinder - it's an exchange (about $40 iirc) vs. reseat a few components, check an O-ring, and fill from a SCUBA tank.
Ortovox has a system similar to ABS.

Snowpulse has the best pack design. Pockets for everything, and I like the head/neck protection that airbag offers. I've been riding with a Snowpulse pack for about 7 years now (one of the first riders in the US).

Pieps/BD has the electronic system, but IMO the bag design needs some work.

More important than brand is that you get one that fits well.
Some manufacturers also offer a vest-style pack. Some guys really like that style, I don't care for them.

>Avalanche org I work with is sponsored by all the avalanche pack brands
>Snowpulse is one of my sponsors

>I moved to an avalanche prone area and a couple people died this past year. Need to get me one!
Start with the training.
Learn how to recognize avalanche terrain and evaluate snow conditions. Go over the avalanche bulletin and look for the signs of instability as you ride.
Practice rescue scenarios - hazard identification, signal search, coarse search, clues, pinpoint search, probe and shoveling techniques. Ride with others that have this training/equipment too!
Also recommend basic first-aid training.

Go for a class, get some education, and play with some gear before you make the investment.

Beacon, shovel, probe are bare-minimum.

Some beacons have a lot of features and buttons. Others are simple.
Analog vs. digital, go digital.
One vs. Two vs. Three antennas - 3-antennas are faster and more accurate. Go with a 3-antenna beacon. (I have a Tracker 2.)

Shovels have a lot of different features. The saws in some of them are mostly useless. Some convert from a shovel to a hoe, that's convenient in some situations. Too big and you'll be tempted to take bigger bites, wearing yourself out faster. (BCA Dozer.)

Probe... 270cm is a good length to work with. I prefer a 300, but because reasons I'm carrying a 270. It's rare I "need" that extra 30cm. Important things here are a quick/easy latching system, and solid when assembled. (Stealth 270 in my pack.)

GET TRAINING!!! Don't think I can stress this enough. Best tools in the world won't help you or your buddy if you can't effectively manage and execute a rescue.

Pack comes secondary to the rest of the gear/training. Pack you wear for you, the rest of the gear's for the crew you're riding with.

I've got friends who have been killed in avalanches (the reason I do what I do). Two friends killed just this year.
I've also got a bunch of friends who are alive and still riding today because they have the gear, training, and so does the rest of their riding group.
