The last thing I want to do is post a government issued ID that people can use to find my name and address on 5chen.

Hit me up on the skywarn repeaters if u are in texas.

This is now a cheap handheld radio thread. I don't have a HF set up at home QTH. Been here five years and still haven't set anything up, feels bad man.
My new UV-5R is an ok EDC. I like the way I can put VHF 2m frequencies and VHF marine, UHF CB and 70cm amateur frequencies in one radio. Pretty bummed when I realised it wasn't a dual VFO radio. The dual watch function takes care of that though. Not bad for $65. It came with all accessories too.
What do you use for VHF/UHF comms /out?

The uv5 is the basic starter radio. Just don't transmit without a license. Also there is no uhf cb, it is hams that talk in cars. Cb is 11 meter.

I have a yaesu 857. It is agood all around hf radio but it is great at nothing. But I can take it anywhere qnd I like that.

I will monitor skywarn for 30 minutes again after this post since it seems you guys can only get on uhf/fhf

In Australia there are two CB bands: one on 27MHz and another on 477MHz. I think your FRF is about the same band. None of our CB bands require permits or licenses. I am licensed for all the frequencies I transmit on. Technically I am breaking rules using the UV-5R for CB as it doesn't comply with class licensing for these devices. As far as entry level radios go it's pretty good. If I drop it over the side of the boat, nothing of value will have been lost. If I dropped a Yaesu or Kenwood or Icom in the ocean I might have a little cry...

I'm waiting for the poor fucker that posts his callsign.

Ah uea I don't know upsidedownland regs. Off the top of my head 477ish here is commercial but I'm not sure.

And yea I wasn't disparaging uv5rs I own two for todaythat exact reason. They are perfectly functional little radios that can be bought for cheap.

I used to be a deckhand on a tug and I lost a 200 dollar icom every year. I would have glasly bought a 35 dollar baefung if they had existed.

I have been using the baofeng on the local ham UHF repeater to access echolink. A K0 callsign called in from Buffalo today, had a chat with him for a while. That was cool. VHF and UHF aren't much good when you are out in the sticks though. Have you done much portable HF operation?

Echolink is cool to alot of people but I just see it as internet phone. Yea I bought my 857 so could take it anywhere. My morse is abysmally slow but I will transmit ssb in national parks for those hunter fags. I actually prefer stinging up an antenna in the woods over my home shack.

For simplex long-range, sure. But if you can hit a repeater? Yeah, i'll take my little 5W handheld over a car battery, few hundred feet of wire, and mobile rig any day.

Climb a hill or a tree and start scanning. I can hit repeaters 70 miles away no problem.
