red pill me on bonsais
>>
You will quickly end up with 15 of them. Seriously, just having one is boring. It dosen't take that much of your time so if you wanna be like mr.Miyagi you'll end up growing quite a few. Also consider that most species require a decent amount of light. I never had outdoors ones so I can't help you with that. I'm kind of a newfag to bonsais anyways, but after 1 year I think it's fun.

what are the best guides?

>>

>best place to buy?

I wish I knew an answer to this as well, I saw some bonsai at the local gardenstore and they all looked shit and malnourished, a bit overpriced too.
>>
>>804882
where did you buy yours?
>>
>>804883
Oh sorry, I'm a different guy, I never bought any.
I am working on some boxwood cutlings that I might try to model into something bonsai worthy.
>>
>>804885
thats a lengthy process. i might try it one day but im not sure i could take that severe a time investment.
>>
>>804892
Well, it takes long but it's not much effort.
I took them two years ago and they are growing nicely but they still don't have any mass to them.
>>
>>804864
I tried to rescue mine from a Walmart. It was half dead so it was very cheap. I think I put too much stress on it too quickly though in an attempt to save it and killed it. But you can get them cheap in chain stores, if you're willing to try and nurture one back to health.
>>
How much do they cost?
>>
I bought a bonsai tree from the Asian part of Epcot at Disney when I was a kid. I thought it was awesome and I kept it alive for several years until we went on another vacation one year and it didn't get watered for too long and I couldn't resuscitate it.

I love the things and I'd like another but don't really know where to begin. Will be monitoring this thread
>>
Where do you get the low pots? that is what I'm wondering as all the pots I see in gardenshops and home-decoration outlets have the wrong shape, basically always too tall.

One of the reasons I would get into pottery if I had the money and space for it.
>>
>>804864
You can use any tree and turn it into a bonsai, just take a small cutting or find a sprouting one in the spring and start from there

it's harder'n horsecocks to pull it off though. keeping a large hardwood or similar happy and healthy in a little pot must take constant maintenance. i have a brown thumb as it is, but would love to keep a bonsai oak alive for like 50 years
>>
>>805162
you can only find ones native to your area if you use that method. it also takes years longer to reach the same aesthetic level.

is it not better to buy a specialized cutting somewhere for it?

I was hiking once and found an adult bonsai. It's the tree in the center.
>>
>>805209
kek, really looks like one.

it's really easy to make a bunch of bonsai from scratch with a young gum (ficus). takes maybe 2 years until it's big enough to actually shape it. but hey, you will look back after 15 years and you made this.
>>
what determines whether a bonsai can be kept indoors? will it not be beset be birds and weather if kept outside?
>>
>>805223
Some tropical tree species prefer a warmer indoor climate while others wouldn't mind sitting outside most of the time.
Of course you can take them inside for a day if your having visitors or something but it depends on the species.
>>
>>805240
what about things that grow in england.
im thinking cherry, pine, willow etc.
>>
>>805243
Well, those trees all grow outside in England, right?
Then that's probably what they prefer.
There's a whole lot to say about what plants need, I suggest you buy some books on Bonsai growing.
>>
>>805244
there are no trees that naturally grow inside, what do you mean?
what are some good online resources for this kind of thing?

>>
Fucking idiots.

Literally any tree can be made into a bonzai tree. Particular species are preferred for arbitrary cultural reasons, but you can make anything into one if you know what you're doing.

Also, it's really hard because you're creating an artificial environment that the tree is not used to and it's likely to die or grow in unhealthy ways if you fuck with it too much. Just get a sapling and let it grow, trim it A LOT but not too much so you don't kill it. With any luck it might work, but most likely it won't. You can also buy them already started from many types of stores such as home depot or lowes.

Maybe try real gardening and make vegetables or something that are actually useful.

Generally those are only in the small pot for a few days for display, otherwise outside in the ground or a large plastic pot.

But wouldn't the roots grow too big if it were to sit in a bigger pot?
And wouldn't trimming the roots too much cause damage to the plant?

I assumed they had to sit in pots of similar size that you want to display them in.

Can I do this with a weed tree lmao like so I can grow small weeds and get a "little" high lmao with a small bong lmao

There is no difference between a bonsai and a regular tree besides trimming. Imagine that next time you see a redwood bonsai.

i've also read that the constricting of root growth has some sort of varying effects depending on species

Trimming roots is fine, and important in keeping the tree miniature. The key is to get rid of the tap root and other big, thick roots. It's the fine, hairlike roots that do the actual work of supporting the plant (nutritionally).

>>804845
-bonsai was originally chinese not japanese; it was called penjing
>
-you can make bonsai out of any tree/shrub (fruit bearing or even some succulents)
>
-they can be indoor or outdoor(local species are better outdoor)
>
-usually bonsai is nursery stock OR grown from seed, trained over many years to look a certain way
>
-bonsai may also be collected from the wild and potted this is called yamadori
>
finally there are several sizes and styles of bonsai, some combinations work better than others given the species you are using

what is the correct way to make a cutting of a tree? just break off a twig?
>>
>>813807
It kinda depends on the tree, some require special attention because not every tree is easy to cut from.
Anyway basically just make a clean diagonal cut, cut of some bark on the end too to allow roots to grow and dip the end in cutting powder if you have any, that will encourage roots to grow.
Then stick it in the ground and put it in a balanced environment with not too much sun and not too dry but not too wet either.
A glas planter box helps keep some of the moisture inside but be careful as you don't want fungus and mold to appear so it needs fresh air too.

Just try some things, always make more cuttings than you think you need.
I'm no expert but I'm working on a few trees that I made from cuttings.
>>
>>808645
actually if you just let those girls get rootbound, they'll just grow proportionate to the space. if they only have, say, an egg tray's space you'll get something akin to a mini palm tree with pinky-nail sized buds like coconuts
