The helmet is hanging back there somewhere. Certain skateparks require a helmet and I'm not trying to rent some sweaty, stinky one.
Works well for fishing too. I need to get a dedicated Jazzercise helmet one day. I might ask for one for my birthday.

I wear a helmet snowboarding, my friends don't and call me a pussy.
I go on the ice coast and you never know when you're gonna a hit a patch of ice at 40 mph plus and tale a hard fall.

I ride race-legal. Helmet, goggles (spring rides I'll wear sunglasses), protective vest w/ shoulder pads, knee braces are req'd for racing.
In addition to that, I typically add elbow pads and armored shorts under my gear as well.
In years past I'd regularly hear "Why do you need all that gear?".
Sometimes it's me that wrecks, find a rock wide-open up the side of a hill that pitches me over the front of the sled and usually bends front-end parts or handlebars...
Sometimes it's them that finds a rock, log, hole in the snow, whatever... end of the day they pull me aside and ask for more info on my vest...
Doesn't happen as much now... i'd say the majority of experienced riders I ride with wear about as much gear as I do. Elbows are about the only thing I wear that's "unique" now, and I don't wear them every day (just when I feel like it, definitely if i'm racing).
The noobs I ride with look up to me for advice/education, so when they see "the professionals" all wearing that sort of gear, they generally follow suit.

Another racer in my class broke his ankle on that step-down in round 2. I think one of the sport-class guys got knocked out there too.
Finals lap, they combined longtrack and sport since so many of us in each class broke shit, either on ourselves or our sleds.
Last lap of finals, I cased a big double and broke my ankle. I'd have taken 2nd if I finished, was kind of kicking ass that race.
So I wear my motocross boots when I race now.
Miscalculated a jump in January in the backcountry... ended up landing on a rock and folding that sled up good enough to total it. I was glad to have all my gear on for that ride...
