Not OP, but are you suggesting the great lakes don't connect to New Orleans? (Obviously if you go around through the atlantic they do) That's the whole reason Chicago exists, they built canals specifically to connect the lakes with the continental interior and New Orleans. And then canals in New York to further reduce travel times.
