I can understand why you wouldn't want to give out your real name to a bunch of strangers you meet in the woods miles away from anywhere, but I think the idea of giving yourself some tryhard hipster name is just lame. I guess the idea is to have some sort of instant culture that can allow you to quickly form friendship bonds with strangers? "Ha ha! You did/said some unremarkable thing! Your trail name is _______ now! We're friends now, right?"
Then again the whole reason I like hiking is because I'm a misanthrope who wants to get the hell away from people, not meet more of them.

I don't have any permanent "trail name", but I recently missed a swing with my hatchet and chopped up my foot pretty good, so my friends started calling me Hatchet Foot and Limp Strutter for the rest of the trip.

the scouts here have a tradition of giving out trail names in some kind of ceremony. usually one boy gets kidnapped in the middle of the night by the leaders and has to do some kind of daring. the others go search for him. when they find eachother, they will get a hot chocolate and a snack and the boy gets his name. then back to the tents and sleep until morning.
