Yea there are a bunch of leantos scattered about that make for really cool camping and some great trails with cool points of interest. By mass standards the place is fucking massive. I live in southie so I made it an overnight. It's like a good 4 miles (tough for miles if you ask me) to the sites and than like 4-5 to get up to greylock depending on which leanto you get. Reserve a tent site in advance just in case you get the 1 in a million chance of someone getting at the leanto before you do but chances are good you will be very alone in your leanto

Heavy rain and some wind all day along. Originally intended it to be longer and a 2 day hike, but the weather was seriously shiet so I just rushed it.

Just got back yesterday from a week in the boundary waters canoe area. Unfortunately my camera broke right before I left so I have no pictures but I caught a shiteload of walleye and a few brookies so the trip was very worthwhile.

I really hope that everyone here on /out/ plans a trip to the bwca at least once. I am never as happy as when I am there.

just checked it out online. that place looks super nice. I'm adding it to my kayak/canoe list, along with the everglades. i live in new england so we don't really have sprawled lakes and wetlands like that. maybe a couple places in ME or NH, and then upstate NY

awesome man, it's really cool!

if you can make a two or three night trip out of it, I'd recommend paddling from the portage site by Beaver Creek Campground on Priest, up against the current through the thoroughfare.

Upper Priest was slightly larger than I was anticipating. But in windy conditions it can still be crossed entirely from south to north in a little over an hour.

The trail that we day hiked is Upper Priest 302. It's 4 miles long from the northern most campground, Trapper. It's some badass old growth forest. Really dense. Not a place I'd like to run into a bear at.

302 ends on a Forest Service road. Head north up the road and you'll eventually run into Upper Priest 308 trail, which follows the Upper Priest River pretty much all the way to Canada. You're right on the edge of Washington and the Salmo-Priest Wilderness, and pretty much in the heart of the southern Selkirks.

I recommend it. Great area.

Okay one more.

There were a lot of mosquitoes on this part of the trail, partly due to the damp river bed you follow.

Also, there was a lot of moose sign along the trail. Tracks and scat. Running into a bull on this trail close to breeding season would be quite the story. I heard a moose stomping around in the water at about midnight on the opposite side of the lake. Pretty cool stuff.

There's some bear boxes at the official campground, but you'll want to hang a bag in the backcountry parts. So much bear sign in some places I'm surprised I went the whole weekend without seeing one.

Cool, thanks for the info. Looks awesome back there. Idaho has crazy /out/ land. There's so fucking much to explore. But I would really like to try canoe camping, never done it before.

I agree though, I would not be thrilled if I ran into a moose up there. I imagine it's mainly black bear, but I'm pretty sure there are some grizzlies up there too. Blackies I don't care much about (bears that is), but grizzlies are a different story.

Looks good man, I'm actually about to make a quick breakfast and get out for a short hike this morning. 46 degrees out this morning, fucking perfect. Cheers and thanks again for the info!

That's insane. I was just literally talkin to this chick on Bumble (some dating app... i know, i know) about national parks. I've been traveling the last year and have been to 23 NPs. She's a pro photographer. She messages me first and asks what my fav NP was. I say Yellowstone because I was there early and it wasn't crowded and the wildlife is unprecedented. She says, "HAH! Yellowstone? Hilarious." My other 2 favs were Glacier and Capitol Reef.

I ask hers and her first one is Zion.... Dropped.

When I went to Zion it was the exact same thing. I wanted to drive up to the trails/sites I wanted to visit. They had it all shut down. I forget the name of the little artsty fartsy tourist town in the valley of Zion, but it was literally shuttles that had 10-15 stops within 5 or so miles going up into the canyons. FUCK. THAT.

I loved the drive through the mountainside on the way in, but I rolled in and was checking things out.... I noped out. Drove around the backside and did some offroading and camping. Surprisingly enough, there is a backside entrance that is part Zion/part NF/part private land that has some great roads on it. I'd have to look it up again to find it, I just drove.

tl;dr: FUCK ZION (at least during the semi-busy season.) Gorgeous I'm sure, but I've got better places to spend my time if it's that pathetically run.

Springdale and considering the amount of human traffic that in such a small area, do you really blame them for restricting vehicle access?

Kolob Reservoir is north of Zion and it's free to camp there. The Kolob Terrace Road also leads to the bread and butter of Zion, which is the backcountry trails (Subway, Narrows, West Rim).

Apart from the trails of Zion, there's a multitude of canyoning routes that will lead you through terrain that you probably won't find anywhere else in the world.

Zion is easily one of my favorite parks. There's a sequence of trails that lead from Kolob Canyons to Zion that I would like to backpack with my dad someday.

I know a bit more about Cache Valley and Southern Utah. I've tended to avoid SLC for outdoor things until recently, getting into rock climbing. Apparently the Cottonwoods are huge for rock climbing.

What little portion I did see of the Mount Olympus trail was amazing. Granted, we walked off the trail to climb, but the view was amazing. I'd recommend going up that trail all the way.

Congrats man, that's one of the best ways to get started. Drive, enjoy the scenery and when the mood strikes, pull over and hop out for a bit and explore. If you aren't comfortable doing something, don't do it. You'll gradually feel better and want to go farther from your car and farther into the back country. Keep it up though, you're in a super /out/ state so the possibilities are endless.

Also, if you don't feel comfortable hiking into the woods or there aren't any established trails, bring a book or some music or a little stove and do some reading or make yourself a simple little meal/snack. You'll be hangin outside and be able to ingratiate yourself and feel better out there. Cheers and enjoy!

Drove down Vermont from QC to MA along the 100. So many nice towns along the way, would highly recommend. Pic is Texas Falls, which is just off the highway.

did you hear them making the chainsaw noise? they're mimics, and apparently in those forests around the cathedral ranges etc, you can sometimes hear them mimicking chainsaws and logging machinery

It's beautiful. Idaho is super /out/ and i've just scratched the surface of it. When my friend comes to visit, we're gonna head u north and explore some of the real back country. Went again yesterday morning and caught a few largemouth below Swan Falls Dam. I try and get out there real early to catch sunrise and before it starts getting hot.

The last strech was a really steep climb to make without proper mountain gear, prolly around 60 degrees inclination on solid rock, had to use the whole body, but the vista was worthit.

Neat, I figure there must be a lot of Utah folks here. It's a pretty based /out/ state.

I'm currently without a vehicle, any sweet trails besides bonneville and Olympus that I can get to on public transit?
