It's a tough slog but not too difficult for an entry into mountaineering. It's not technical but you'd be wise to bring an ice axe and crampons/microspikes...the snow crusts to ice overnight and it can be slick heading up in the early morning. St Helens is close by if you have a permit and want something with less snow.

I'm in western ky, paducah.
Lbl is pretty cool, there are gravel roads crisscrossing most of it, so it's not bfe if you want that. The lakes are great though and the scenery is ok. People will leave you alone most times, but rangers are errywhere.
Red River gorge was previously mentioned in this thread and is great, but have not been in almost 20 years.
You could re-enact deliverance out in eastern ky, that's real hiking country, but I don't go over there.
Most of the time I camp in southern Illinois because I don't think people should have to pay for camping. Garden of the gods is fantastic, as are bell smith springs (pic related), Jackson falls, burden falls, fern clyffe.

Cool springs cave in cadiz used to be cool too, not to far from lbl. They bulldozed the entrance the last time I was there looking, but you used to be able to spend hours wandering around inside. It was a wet cave, some parts you had to wade through, some you had to swim. There was what we called bat-guano-slide, which was a hill of bat shit you could slide down into the water.

Took a cable car to the top, the view of the natural bridge was cool. There was a spot there that I found much more beautiful. Chimney Top Rock is the name. Absolutely amazing. It was a bit foggy in the valley, and you can see for ages in each direction. Hard to describe how it was.
