What's a good spread to put with tortillas while backpacking? Meaning it cant spoil and such.

Bonus points for no peanut butter.

I was thinking 2 packs of tortillas, and some sort of add-water-meal would go well too.

squeezable bacon cream cheese that can be unrefrigerated for a week

unfortunately is has to be ordered directly from yurop, so shipping effectively doubles its price. :(
>>
>>782436
while I love cream cheese I get gas/stomach pains if I eat too much dairy. That seems hi cal as fuck tho and seems perfect nonetheless
>>
>>782431
All the weight you are saving is meaningless because you still have to carry around things to fill them with. Get rye or whole wheat bread and cured meats instead.
>>
Crushed up poptarts
>>
>>782448
Wouldnt rye/wh tortillas still be ok? Id imagine any non-flat bread would be a bitch to carry.
>>
>>782465
this, I usually fill up all my pockets with it for quick access
>>
>>782467
and then when the bears come you just body slam one, that scares the rest away, and you have fresh meat.
>>
>>782448
>All the weight you are saving is meaningless

I don't think weight saving is his goal. Most likely, he picked tortillas because they taste good, are moderately high in calories and can be stored for a long period of time without refrigeration.
>>
>>782470
OP here, Lightweight food in title but I do agree that I just like tortillas. And I honestly thought they were best for calories/storage
>>
>>782473
2 pounds of peanut butter
>>

>Lightweight food in title

Yeah... uh... totally missed that.
>>
>>782431
I usually put it on crisp bread or crackers, but maybe instant hummus would work on tortillas.
Just add water, and oil if you have it stir and you have spreadable hummus
>>
>>782503
On a solo day I took hummus and tortillas and they were delish.

We've got 14 replies and nobody has said nutella? 150 calories/ounce, delicious, and lasts about a month after opening without refrigeration.

Never had pic related before, seems like a cheaper alt to cured meats like summer sausage I guess.

Would anyone recommend?
>>
>>782534
I eat those /out/. Gross when you're /in/ but after a day of hiking the fat, salt, and smushy protein is godly. I could have like 3 with/for dinner
>>
>>782534
One issue with spam is that it's only about 85 calories per ounce. Technically less if you're bringing the can. A small pouch like that wouldn't be too bad though, and it's pretty difficult to get protein in a portable, calorie dense format.
>>
>>782534
Those singles packets are waaay too expensive for what they are.
>>
>>782532
>lasts about a month
not in my cupboard it doesn't

>inb4 fatass
thankfully i have the metabolism of a kenyan marathoner and i stay active, so not a problem for me.
>>
>>782539
>>782543
Calorie/price wise id imagine it's better than summer sausage.

Also how about packets of other meats such as tuna, salmon, and chicken?
>>
>>782558
I like tuna packed in oil (Starkist yellowtail in extra virgin olive oil). Only about 190kcal, but it tastes good and get you 18g of protein. Last trip I took two of them and had them with couscous and some Knorr something-something-noodles.

I am having to look into more calorie heavy options. Between one of these meals, a mountain house and rtrail mix only get about 1500kcal a day. On a weekend trip that is no biggie, but looking at doing some 100+ mile stuff this fall, will need to keep the calories up for that.

Speaking of lightweight food, what's the lightest way to make coffee while out?

Usually I just pack away a kettle to heat water in, and a French press to brew in, but I'm thinking there must be some way to combine them. Ideally it'd be a French press or perc that could be heated over an open flame, but you might burn the coffee.

It's not like these two things are even that heavy, but I feel compelled to streamline the stuff I take with me, and minimize, as it were
>>
>>782627
starbucks via is the real lightest drinkable

lightest that doesn't taste like shit is single cup drip. pic related
>>
>>782631
Well damn, I've never seen one of these. Pretty cool, but I'd still be carrying the kettle. I think I'd buy something like a metal filter for it as well. Overall cleanup on this thing would be much easier than the French press though.

I'll probably look into carrying this, thanks anon
>>
>>782543
...less than a dollar? IDK about where you live, but Winco sells those for like $0.75 or so. The smoked salmon packets, which I prefer, do go for a little more, but still less than $2.
>>
>>782638
>metal filter
probably the way to go. gizmo's cheap, filters are where they get your $. i hadn't even thought to look for one. so you're welcome, and also thanks. :)

Cuban coffee maker might do the trick for you. Water goes in the bottom part. There's a stem that you put your coffee in, heat forces the water through the stem and into the top container.

I hope you like your coffee strong though.

also Hershey chocolate peanut
nut butters of almost any variety is good
but peanuts seem to be high on the list for nutritional value above some other nuts

Smaller amount of PB with pepitas, sunflower seeds, crushed almonds, and crushed pecans added. Makes it really calorie dense and draws out a smaller amount of PB

if i really need to save on weight i usually just bring some BP-5, a good calorie & nutrition value to weight ratio. it doesn't taste of anything tho, so it is bland (can be made in to a porridge if mixed with water)

anyhow, i don't know what the availability is the the US, but i would bring some Orifo soft-packs with mackarel in tomatosauce or some paté (really i use a lot of stuff from the national MRE, the contents are incredibly high quality in ours vs. most other countries)
>>
>>783482
yeah but it doesn't keep so you have to eat it all at once and that's just too much spalm
>>
List for a multi-day:

Ramen, tortillas, nutella, peanut butter, oatmeal, packets of tuna/salmon

Hell ditch the ramen and oatmeal and you can go without any cooking stuff.

Add in pop tarts, candy, and other trail snacks and it seems solid.

Dried fish from the Asian grocer
Block of parmisan cheese keeps for ages
Home made jerky
Deb (powdered mash potato)
Old faithful dried pasta with a jar of pesto
Ration oats into ziplocks with sugar, cinnamon and a little powdered milk= just add hot water

I didn't check a local asain marketplace yet, good idea

cheese is underrated. cheese and bread/tack has been the hardmans food for a long time. OP can make some quesadillas with a block of cheddar. good tortillas are actually just delicious on their own and just need a steaming for culinary perfection. salt and pepper should be in your kit regardless. you can also make a rudimentary tortilla soup if you carry chicken stock. they would be considered slick dumplings then, used to add heft and sustenance to broths

corn tortillas turn to shit after while.
they get crumbly so you will need to bring oil to reconstitute them to usable.

However:
Flour tortillas will stay good for quite a while in your pack. use parchment paper and a few paper towels and separate them and they wont get stuck together from humidity of being in a plastic bag. just burp the tortilla bag.

stuffings? crushed ramen with underwood chicken spread mixed with a pouch of chicken. and a pack of mayo.
>>
>>784050

This.
Get the real salty shit.

Also you can put out a small fire with a block of cheese by bashing it.
Seen my buddies wife do that
>>
>>782431
mountain house makes this awesome spicy mexican style chicken stuff. i hiked around the smoky mountains with bags of tortillas like that and just made camp tacos with it, super light
>>

came here to say tuna- good man.

best way I found to makeup the calorie deficit is with honeybuns (hostess or w.e. you can find at the gas station) still the best price to calorie to weight ratio ever. I think it's 120-140 cal per ounce.

Opinions on pop tarts? Wouldnt a snickers bar just be better if you're looking for a desert/calorie booster?
>>
>>787510
>Opinions on pop tarts?
Shit-tier unsatisfying junkfood. Will keep you alive if the only alternative is death.
>Wouldnt a snickers bar just be better if you're looking for a desert/calorie booster?
yes. sniggers can melt though, but the texture and inclusion of peanus and chewables makes it way more satisfying, and with protein.
>>
>>787512
>unsatisfying
Well I dig them

Maybe snickers can be cooled in a stream, just enough so it's not liquid i guess.
>>
>>787526
I could enjoy a pop tart from time to time, but they just don't satiate the way an (unmelted) sniggers does
